Matt, this is off subject from what this thread has turned into (don't they all go this way though??), but I believe I saw somewhere that the orange and white plastic bands are being put on birds that have been relocated from urban areas. I think they'd still like you to call in sightings/killings of them, IIRC. Not sure where I saw this at, was either on the DNR's website or the hunting/trapping guide, or . HTH.

I would like to know what exactly the plan is on that? I might call down to the DNR tomorrow and ask.

John, What did they say in the article? Any description of why the different colors?

It basically said they were doing it on city birds and transplanting them somewhere else. Just to see if they come back to the city.
Here it is very short arcticle.
Flock fashions: Some geese get new tracking tag
Some Indiana geese are sporting more accessories than Paris Hilton these days, thanks to a new program to help track fowl that have been moved to new homes. The tags go to troubled birds who have come into conflict with humans in cities and towns. The orange or white plastic bands are bigger than the traditional silver bands many Canada geese have been sporting on their legs for years. The new bands will be attached when the geese are moved to a Fish and Wildlife Area in the state. The tags will help determine whether urban geese return to their cushy city stomping grounds or remain in the wild. -- Star report

That still doesn't answer the white and orange colors. My guess is still male/female or maybe an age thing, new hatchlings vs. older birds.

Checked with my DNR insider, and they said the color differences are for juvenile and adult. They are plastic banding the birds from housing developments, etc. Places they aren't wanted. They are then releasing them on various fish and wildlife areas. They are tracking the birds to see where they go once released, and if they return to the spot at which they were removed from. I'm not sure how they can really track that unless someone is watching them, say the district biologist? I'm not sure if and how we report the plastic leg band info. I dont know how the report a band works as I HAVE YET TO SHOOT SOME BLING! So, I dont know what all info you can provide about the bird when you report. Hope that helps. Brent

Thanks Brent! There are also metal leg bands along with the colored plastic bands, and this is how they know what bird you are reporting, the number from the metal band. I have no idea how they expect to track those birds!

Or you could be like me Brent..... Shoot a banded goose, report it twice, but never hear back from them on where it was from!

Nice! Someone's not doing their job!
With my luck I would shoot a goose report the band and then the CO's would show up at my house to arrest me because the band number came back to a whooping crane, or some protected species!!!
