I believe that hunting there is controlled either by the Kankakee or the Kingsbury game preserves.

Thank you for the added information 1john5:13 I heard back from Tom; here is his response with a number to call to speak with the manager: At Koontz lake there is a state nature preserve on the north side and there is no hunting of any kind allowed there. South of there is Koontz Lake Wetland Conservation Area which I hope Mr. Lynton can tell you more about hunting opportunities on that property. On the south side of the lake is a public access site that allows access to the lake but no hunting opportunities at the access site itself. Mr. Lynton is the manager at Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area, 574-896-3522 or jlynton@dnr.in.gov Hope this helps. Tom Post, IN DNR Hope this helps mossberg

THANK YOU very much , I'm always looking for places to hunt , for me hunting is year round , whether it's scouting for new places to hunt , repairing or replacing the gear that i do have or buying more gear because I'm trying something new . Oh, you sound like my new best friend! I just started hunting late last winter, but research is what I get paid to do, so I've learned a lot. However, I'm green in the field ...or woods. I think about hunting a lot, but I usually dive in head first in anything that I do. I'm going to enter a draw for Goose Pond; if you want to go south let me know. I guess I could hunt with a fella and his Mossberg. Me and every other poor gun lover has or has had a Mossberg. Mine shoots good, but my fragile shoulder feels like it's on the ground after putting a few 3" rounds through it. I'm just old and have a low tollerance for pain. It's the only deer gun that I have, so one shot, one kill works good for me. Let us all know how your hunting goes.

I've been hunting for 27 years now ( I'm 44 yrs old as i type this ) , I was born and raised in Illinois and hunted 2 family dairy farms for pheasant , rabbit , dove , pigeon , then i started hunting state parks around Illinois ( 4 different ones ) the Kankakee river state park , shawnee natl. forest , Irquoise state park , I believe the last state land was castle rock . Then i moved to Indiana ( 8 yrs a go ) and I've hunted willow slough , jasper pulaski , i've checked out kingsbury , i've hunted 3 different preserve hunt places for pen raised pheasants . i've hunted deer once , turkey twice , I jump shoot waterfowl , to me Hunting is a way of life not a hobby , i own a couple of 16 Ga shotguns , 2 mossberg 500's ( 12 , 20 ) a single shot 410 , 12 and a 16 . all but 3 shotguns are used out of 7 .

I like you Mossberg. I can learn a lot from a fella like you. I like to tease, so I was just teasing about the Mossberg.
Hey, are you saying that today is your birthday? Happy Birthday!
I'm curious about the pheasant hunts. I live south of Indy in Greenwood. I'm not aware of any good pheasant places south. Where exactly did you hunt them and would you recommend it?
I have more guns than I'll ever kill anything with, and some I hope that I never have to. When I was a kid, every kid I knew had guns. When I was 18, I had 11 shotguns. To this day, I do not know what happen to them. I think my brother got them, but he's crazy so I won't ask him. He can have them.
I love Berettas, anything Beretta. Really, the biggest reason is that the ones I bought as a young fella felt so good in my hand, maybe it's just the balance. I have a Beretta A400 for waterfowl and turkey. This gun is so smooth and fast! I'm sure there may be better ones, but I'm happy happy happy (Phil Robertson).
You look like you can handle a lot of recoil and not flinch. Me, I'm sending up the white flag after about 3 rounds out of a Mossberg. :-)
If you ever want to go south to hunt, let me know.

I love shooting my Mossberg 500 12 Ga , I've had it since 1999 , my Birthday was a month a go . I feel that a person can NEVER own too many guns , I bought the 410. for my Father back in 1989 , He had Bi -Pass surgery back in the early 1980's . So if he wanted to hunt i had to get him a shotgun with little to no recoil , plus he really liked 410's . After he Passed Away in 1990 i started dedicating a hunt in his Name and Honor and used the 410 shotgun for that hunt . I've hunted pen raised Pheasants at Dawn to Dusk hunt club , Sandy prairie , and Summit lake hunting preserve in Akron county All those are in Indiana and I hunted Rock Hallow hunt club in Freeport Illinois , I do Hunt wild Pheasants in Illinois on my Uncles Farm . But when I want to stock up the Freezer I buy my Pheasants , I understand that it's not the same as Wild Pheasants but it keeps me and my Hunting partner's shooting skills good , just look up on line for Pheasant hunting clubs in your area . oh yea don't worry I have a great since of humor .

Dawn to Dusk Hunt Club , The owner is a great person , it's only a half hr drive from my house , I've actually became friends with the owner about 5 yrs a go . he has pen raised Pheasants and chukar . The birds can be challenging to shoot , one of the hunts i was on it took a half hour to an hour to find the last Chukar to shoot , the guide and his 3 Pointing dogs , me and my sister and camera man ( my Brother ) had to keep walking back and forth side ways from 1 end of the Hunting area to the other end of the Hunting area to finally have the bird fall to the shot of my Winchester 1200 16 Ga. shotgun , Actually I felt kinda bad for the bird because of it's will to wanting to live . But after each bird or animal i do shoot i give Thanks to it .

Hey Moss, I just received a message from the Property Manager at Koontz Lake. Here's what he said: Waterfowl hunting is allowed on any portion of Koontz Lake. However anything in the sediment trap is not. But on the main lake waterfowl hunting is permitted. The public access site allows for one to launch a boat and hunt anywhere on the lake. There are no certain restrictions or drawings of any kind that allow people to hunt there. It is simply on a first come first serve basis. Hope this helps and enjoy.

I've sorta lived on the lake most of my life. There are a few guys who duck hunt from a boat on occasion. I talked to the CO one day when I wanted to hunt on the lake and a neighbor said that they'd call the CO on me if I did. He said screw 'em it's legal anywhere on the lake, just be careful where the shot falls, as you don't want it dropping on any of the houses. He said to whack all the resident geese that I legally could. I did, they called and were not happy when they found out that there was nothing they could do. Just be careful. I know there used to be a guy who lives on the far West side of the lake (just south of the HUGE house on the west side of the little lake) who fed the ducks and geese as long as the water was open. I have a feeling that none of the boat hunters knew that, and that they could have gotten in trouble - even if they didn't know about it. Last year with the warm winter, the center of the big lake stayed open most of the year and it was black with Canada Geese, then later on in February, it was white with Snows. At times during nusance goose season it's pretty comical. You'll see a boat all camo'd up, a big pile of fake grass on it, and a couple dozen decoys out in front of it, and water skiiers and jet skiis going past.
