Hello, I'm new to hunting and this spring was my first turkey hunt. I want to comment on the Haint gobble call, and ask a few questions.
The Haint gobble call is an awesome tool. It did take me a while to learn how to use it, and can't claim that I'm consitently competent with it even now. However, it's an awesome feeling to interact with a wild bird.
While not hunting turkey before, I did some research and seem to have a different approach. I learned that toms call the hens to them. I asked myself, how am I to call a tom in if he expects my hen to come to him? It's my limited experience that the toms and jakes come in to fight for the hen and or territory. I would expect any tom or jake would jump at any opportunity to mate, but to leave the hens that are following him would probably take a considerable perceived threat to his territory.
I started out using a dominate tom decoy, but he intimated more than were willing to fight. Actually, none came all the way to him. I'm sure that the dominate tom in the area would have accdepted the challenge. However, for my first ever kill, I would have taken the skinny jake. I now have a Funcky Chicken decoy. Other than his aggressive stance, this jake looks like he's begging for a whippin.
Please help me understand if I'm on a good path, or I need to reconsider my approach and take up suffle boarding.
