While heading down to my pond this morning to do a little dog training my 5 month old yellow Lab female ran out from a blind spot and under my atv tire, in doing so she broke all her toes on her left rear foot. The Vet has recommended a Orthopedic surgeon in Indianapolis at an estimated cost of 2 thousand dollars or more. The Vet said that if I don't go that route the foot will heal in time however it will probably be deformed and it may effect her performance. This is a good young dog with a lot of promise. WHAT WOULD YOU DO.

I think I would pay to have it's paw fixed.

My dog is part of our family. If my son or daughter needed surgery, we wouldn't think twice. I wouldn't think twice about fixing the dog either.

I know that sometimes with a pet you have to make a decision and $2,000 is a lot of money, but if I were in that situation and had the money, I wouldn't think twice about getting the surgery for the dog.

I paid right 3 grand for a mix breed mutt that the neighbors rottweiler attacked and ripped his wind pipe for surgery. He passes nasty gas and snores like a hog, but still well worth the cost. He's my best friend.

Well after a lot of consideration and advise from you folks I have decided to have her toes repaired I am just not sure if I will take her to a recommended surgeon in Indianapolis or maybe Purdue in West Lafayette. Have any of you ever dealt with Purdue regarding dog issues.

Well we got lucky that there was a last min opening for tomorrow for surgery at the Purdue campus. We are also lucky because employees of the university get a discount. So that means that I will get one of those bumper stickers that says "MY MONEY AND MY DOG BOTH WENT TO PURDUE".

My lab sleeps in bed with me and I love her dearly,, but 2 grand is a tough bill to swallow.. especially at 5 months into it. I remember when I first got her saying if she didnt live up to my expectations I would be able to put her down and start over,, but thats a tough decision also. But I have pigeons that I can pull heads and fill up a bag with and never think twice about if they dont work the way they are supposed to. I have had pigeons come home from races with broken legs and in the bag they go. . The hard part is trying to find the differance between a working animal and a pet.
