:oI was at Gander last evening and looking at the price of steel, when I saw a new box of shells(sorry don't remember any thing other then price!). Comes in 10 like hevi I cant remember what it was but the stinking price was $35/10 shells Any of the pro-staffers shooting any of that stuff as I don't see to many dropping that kind a cash on shells? Granted that is more then likely the cheapest part of most outfits it's more of a mental block for most. $3.50 per shell...OUCH. They had some of the Federal "Black Cloud" but didn't catch the price. Typical prices on Federal, Winchester, and Remington shells maybe up a bit from last year but not much.

It's tough to pay the $ for the heavy shot, etc., but they do have their advantages also. I typically just use the Winchester Expert hi-velocity steel, but the heavy shot or HD shot does cut down on the cripples and lost birds. Of course if you're a bad shot it doesn't matter what you're shooting and not worth paying the extra $. If you know they are going to be in your face that day the inexpensive steel shot will do, but there are days when you know you are going to have some longer shots, whether it be your blind or hide is alittle from the edge of the water, etc., or you are going to be pass shooting, etc. then the HD really does stand out from the standard steel shot. Like anything else, I would say try it and see for yourself and make your own decision on it. Some that I know of that use it claim they use less shells per season then when they were shooting steel, no clean up shots needed, etc. It does knock them dead! Anyway, see if you can find some on sale sometime and try a box and see what you think! Also one other side benefit of it is, you can drop down to smaller shot and get more pellets with the same knock down power as the bigger steel shot, so more percentage of shot in the pattern, definitely a good side affect of the heavy shot. a 6 shot heavy would be like shooting a 2 shot steel, but you get ALOT more pellets in that kill area so not as many holes in the pattern.

That expensive stuff is what I shoot on the skeet field........ Good points Matt!!! There's gotta be some advantages to it, or nobody would pay for it, and the makers would stop manufacturing it. Me? I'll stick to the $20/box stuff......and I'm not partial to any particular brand. If I can find Federals on sale I'll take em, or if Remingtons are on sale than those are what's going into the cart. Matters not to me.

pigeon...for the amout of destruction you've put on them birds I'm suprised you'll have anything to hunt come 1 September. I have some Hevi Shot I traded someone for something two or so years ago and haven't used, yet. Everything for me is, whatever brand but all 3 1/2.

Heavi-Shot is for them guys who like to feel like they have a big @%$# when they really dont...... You put birds in your face and the problem is solved. Just remember,,, FEET DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!! If they are not in your face,, you are just educating them. Remington Nitro Mags rock!!!!!!! The key is learning how to get them in your face ;D ;D ;D If you are not decoying the bird in,, why kill it? Yes Art,, I left just a few for brood stock.... They have raised some nice lookin young this year. ;D ;D ;D Is it Aug 30th yet? ??

Pigeonflier, WE ARE Not WORTHY, WE ARE Not WORTHY, WE ARE Not WORTHY.
Acteually I put that in there as I figured it would raise someones dander!!!=)
Anyways is there an advantage or just good marketing. I've seen guys brag about using dead coyote loads on geese for 100yrd shots. Stuff like that I believe when I see only.
I like 3.5" fast steel BBs or 2s It kills teal to geese no problem, even with the high end stuff on sale it's too expensive for me.

Where the 'fancy' shell's real advantages come into play are well beyond most folks comfortable (ethical) range. I've tried hevi, bismuth (when it was still around), hevi-steel, & various makers TM. Some of it is impressive stuff, but worth the extra cost IMHO.
For the record, I shoot Kent 3.5" #2s at 1650fps. 99% of the time. If I do my part the SBE and Mr Kent kill the birds just as dead as some fancy shell at twice the cost.

I agree, done right the cheap steel does fine. I'm sure it has it's place to some shooters. Kent faststeel bad boys(bb) are good enough for me.

I'm using up what I have left over and switching to Kent #1's 3" exclusively. It works great for ducks and I can get it for $1 a box more than Experts or Sportsmans.

I shoot the cheapest steel 2's I can find, 3 inch shells at almost everything (late season geese being the exception). I also keep 5 or 6 of the expensive high density non tox for cripple purposes. Like pigeon said though, when they are in range it doesn't really matter.

If anyone is interested Remington has a $150 rebate per case or $15 per box of their HD shot, which should bring the price down to about $15 bucks per box.
