I have a question for all you dog owners, I have a real problem with flys on my dog's ears every year, does anyone have any good ideas how to prevent this? Or a good salve to use to help him? Thanks!!!

The two I use for flys on my beagles are made by Happy Jack. One is called X-pell and is a spray on fly repellent, works very good. The second one is Onex wound ointment that has fly repellent in it. Its used for wounds to keep flys off. The third one you can use is Vick's Vapor rub. No matter which one you use they will try to rub it off.
The one I use most is X-pell. You can get these at most TSC stores or any farm store that sells Happy Jack products. h.h.

"Fly repelant ointment" by VIP (vetranarian insecticide product)
got it from my vet last summer and put a bit on my chessy's ears about every 2 or 3 days. Just started back last week. Active ingredient is permethrin, I think.
It works. Buster's ears were in bad shape last year and in a week it was cleared up. This year it was 1 day.

In addition I used one commercial salve that was oil based like petroleum jelly and it sucked, made his ears oily and messy the VIP product is verry light and effective

Thanks guys, I'll check into those. Poor guy needs something, the spray on I use now is a joke, and he's a mess.

I went to TSC and got some EMT gel and put it on his hotspots on his ears, and got a product called Bronco Equine fly spray (can also be used for dogs). It's working great so far, and he's a much happier dog! Thanks again guys.

EMT gel is good stuff. I keep it in my blind bag along with super glue. It's good for closing cuts on dogs. Two good produts that take up little space.

I even put a box fan in front of his kennel to keep the flys off of him, but he never laid in front of the fan so that didn't help much either. Glad you found something that is working.

Sometimes if the flys are bad i hang several of those sticky fly tapes in the kennel. I get them at Walmart for a buck or so for 4. Change them out every couple of days. Wont get all of the flys but gives them something other than the dogs to land on. h.h.
