Thank you DNR for making the turkey hunting experience better on the state ground in the southern part of the state!
Don't know about all management areas, but as I drove in this morning I kept seeing these white signs around the parking areas. Didn't pay them much attention until I pulled into where I normally park and there was one off to the side of the lot.
"Only persons checked-in to turkey hunt or fish may be in the field during the turkey season during hunting hours"
I had heard this was coming, but didn't want to get my hopes up until I saw it. First was the 1:00 quit time, now this. Foodplots planted and plenty of birds. It looks like the DNR does listen to the hunters.

I read those signs also but I guess no one else did. Still saw plenty of mushroom hunters and even talked to a couple. I believe that's actually who buggered our youth hunt up.
I actually(luckily) misread the signs and didnt catch the 'only' part. At a glance I thought it just said the all hunters and fishermen had to be signed in during season. Probably would have blew a gasket had I known they werent allowed instead of explaining to Becca that her bird ran away because it is public ground and they have a right to be there too…

Pick 'em. You are signed in to hunt.
Sounds like a mushroom hunter could do the same, just sign in to hunt turkey or fish.

Had a hunt at Pigeon ruined by a shroomer, had a gobbler coming too ! Guy said " oh, sorry"
most of them don't care one bit, but if one got accidentally shot they'd be the first to throw a fit

I've been hosed by mushroom hunters ruining hunts more times than I want to remember. I'd get especially irritated when on draw only hunts, you have to put a sign in your front window announcing that you are turkey hunting, but yet mushroom hunters still come right in on top of you.
Last week during the opening days I never saw any signs like those mentioned at any of the SRA's that I was at.
I've always been in the mindset that mushroom hunters, or those that gather other edibles, roots, etc., should have to purchase a Hunting license since they are taking or hunting something from the state owned property. If anything it would give a new revenue stream to the IDNR to help purhase and maintain the properties. Obviously if you are mushroom hunting on private land a license wouldn't been needed.

I agree with this idea.

They put them signs up at Atterbury ever year and have for a long time, but it does no good. Saw a couple families getting out of their vehicles on Saturday and it was still hunting time, so they shouldn't have been back there. I've never seen mushroom hunters come out in force like they did at Fairbanks while I was hunting there this last week. There were tons of them.
BSUTravis, I think that's a great idea.

I did not see any Sunday +whatever # for them having to have a license ( I would go easy and allow either a hunting or fishing ) to mushroom hunt public ground. If an area is a draw hunt then they should have to put in too. They can go out after 1:00 pm.

Quote" but if one got accidentally shot they'd be the first to throw a fit ". If any kind of hunter shoots another human while hunting than you should have never been a hunter at all!!! FYI last I checked an animal was an animal and a human was a human!!

They've done that a Fairbanks Landing for a while now and over time it's helped but there's always some jack leg who apparently cant read so I'll usually translate for him. But what has helped more than anything is the men in green handing out tickets with fines attached. Seems like more have them have suddenly learned to read.

Had a hunt ruined last night in Morgan-Monroe by a mushroom hunter, guy just stood there like oh sorry and made as much noise as he could when he walked away. He was wearing a white shirt and a red hat ask about wanting to get shot.
