well got out Saturday morning. Was planning on taking my son William but he had a show to do the night before at school ( he does the sound and lights) and got home late. So he was tired and I decided to go out anyway. The bird I got came in through some fallen timber and I watch mostly through my view finder of the camera. He appeared to be a tom as he was strutting and I could see what appeared to be a 8" beard or so swinging and it all happened fast. So any of you turkey experts can you tell me what you think ? spurs were not nubs and 21mm. Either way it was great video footage , and I was able to get rid of a groundhog for the landowner which made them double happy ;D Here is the link www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-8dvY3HNfM |

Man, good question on is it a jake or an adult bird. Since the feathers aren't the same length I'd say he's a jake, but from the looks of it he's an older jake for sure! Great bird and footage! Congrats.

Congrats. confusing  ? He totally fooled me, I just looked at the top of the fan, didn't see the "notch" , saw him in full strut on the view finder, saw the beard when he ducked and thought, good a tom. Got it in frame and shot. Amazed, kind of like ground shrinkage on a deer LOL |

Yeah, when I saw him in your video I didn't think for a moment that he wasn't an adult longbeard. He sure strutted into your setup pretty as a picture!!!! Regardless, he's a beautiful turkey.

There is no question , he is a 2 year old. No way a jake would have 3/4 inch spurs.

My neighbor killed one almost like yours. Except it had nubs for spurs.
I had heard that last years early hatch has produced turkeys of this nature.

Dunno. how heavy was your neighbors ? and are you around Leo area ? this one was almost 21 lbs. I shot a jake, my first bird ever in 2003 out at this spot, it weighed 19lbs 4 oz, the check in guy checked it twice said that was the heaviest jake he had weighed |

there was a bunch of super-jakes in kentucky opening weekend, they were pretty much all gobbling and sounded like mature gobblers, me and my friend both killed one thinking they were 2 year olds, the gobblers acted mostly freaked out by it all

someone sent me a "age by primary wing" picture and according to this the bird is mature not juvenile ? not sure about the fan tail ? He also said, 3/4 spurs, 21lbs, over 5" beard most likely a young 2 year old ?
Either way it was a blast and made for good video footage
