My Bro in Law and I had some great conversation about this subject in the last 3 days. Both of us have had the pleasure of taking some real limbhangers in the past years. But, this was not to be on these opening days. It simply is not always as easy as it looks...or as we have experienced in the past.
We've been hunting the LaPorte county farm and in those 3 days of various morning and evening hunts, we've seen 48 turkeys (8 of which were mature gobblers), 25 deer, 3 coyotes, numerous coons and possums, and 3 bunnies that exploded between us that almost jolted us out of our skin!
We tried everything...every deke set from jakes and hens to nothing at all. Back door sneaks. Natural blinds. No blind at all. Extreme calls. No calls. Team up. Split up. You name it and I think we tried it. We had 3 occasions where hens/jakes walked within 5 yards of us and 2 of these times were no blind...just leaning on a log! The closest any gobbler got was 80 yards. Let's face it, with that many hens they're pretty satisfied. I'm pretty sure some tags will fill before season ends!
But, wow! What a show the Toms put on for us! Fortunately my bro got some good video and I look forward to a copy! Because, this will probably be one of my favorite turkey hunts. It was great just to spend time with my bro and watch the nature show unfold before us!
So this post is probably more for those that have not put a gobbler down yet or simply appreciate the experience of the hunt.
For me the success in a hunt is whatever I choose to make it. And it starts with great memories like this last 3 days!
