I was planting some trees today and scared a hen off of a nest. There were 21 eggs in the nest, so she's had to be on it for a while. I thought it was really early for them to be on a nest already, let alone have a nest full of eggs. Due East of Knox, Indiana, so not that far South, maybe 35-40 miles from the Michigan border.
Is she an early bird or are the hens on nests already?

Not unusual to be on a nest on the 21st of April, but the 21 eggs is unusual. Normally, they will sit on 10-12 eggs. Most of the time, they will not lay any more than their butt can cover, Maybe she has a big rear end?

She would have been bred sometime between March 4th and April 1st, give or take a couple, if today was the first day she sat. 21 is unusual and it is pretty early for that far north. If it isn't, you would hear a lot more of it. Probably not going to be a real successful clutch. Maybe another hen loaned her a few eggs.

Her butt is big - I thought it was a Tom flying away. Scared the heck outta me. I had my back to her and it sounded like the woods exploded. The nest wasn't more than 30' away when she took off.
