I have a chance to night hunt for coyotes and bobcats in Colorado this December. I don't have a light. Any suggestions on a set-up? The FoxPro Wildfire will be going, along with the Mojo critter (we'll be calling in the daytime for a couple of days too).
As for a gun, I have a bolt action .223 Savage, that currently has a 3.5-12x44 AO Aetec on it, but hopefully I'll have something in semi-auto by then. What power scopes does everybody like for a .223? It'll mostly see daytime hunting, but if I have it by then, it'll get used for hunting at night too. Either 50mm or 56mm objective.
There's always the possibility that a Mt. Lion would show up, we did kill one on the Elk hunt this year. (crossed a fresh track, they went back and got the dogs - took 3.5 hrs of chasing, and they said there were 5 or 6 lions in that one canyon.) They saw the dogs behind 4 different lions and one was finally treed.

Buy you a night vision scope for mac fun. There are some intenifiering lights available but I haven't used them yet. The night vision will work well out to 75 - 100 yards or so. One shot is all you need per target.

Your set up now will do fine. Since you will most likely be hunting on snow a standard red lens on a coon light will work and light up their eyes. I use a 4x16 on my .223. and killed varmints out to 300 yards. If your not hide hunting then a BT bullet in 60 grain area will hammer yotes. I use a 69 grain Sierra with 26 grains of Varget in my Savage. Good luck, h.h.

I carry "more" gun at night because it's a pain to track and locate animals that weren't anchored.
Killing a lion with an electronic call is still a misdemenour in Colorado... as is hunting public lands at night.
EDIT: It's also illegal to hunt lions at night. FYI

Thanks for the lion advice. Didn't know that. We'll be on private land.
