I have just purchased a new boat and have gone to the BMV to register it. Can I use it on public waters and use the receipt as proof of registration, or must I wait until my stickers and registration arrive in the mail?

You would be fine to produce your receipt showing that you have paid for the registration and waiting for the excise stickers and registration from BMV. However, if you are using on waters that require the DNR lake usage permit (which is any DNR property except for a Fish and Wildlife Area) you would be required to have that displayed. As additional information, when you receive the registration from the BMV the Registration number will be:
IN four numbers followed by 2two letters such as
IN 1234 AA
The registration is the number that has to be displayed on your boat on both sides on the forward half along with the excise decal. If you have any additional questions, let me know. Enjoy your boating Season.
