In Indy in late Jan. Anyone that has served on a DU committee in the past year is invited. Last year there were live hookups from around the nation and some good food. After all the DU events we pay for our own dinner and such, it was a nice touch to get a meal without having to pay. The raffles and such were only there to cover the cost on the room. Ya stand a better chance of winning something there than at a typical banquet. My wife and I will be there. Scott

Scott, let me know if you guys are in need of committee help this year. Last year was too nuts for me, but this year, I'll do it.

Following up to hotshot's comments:
This event, as he stated is for DU volunteers as a way to thank them for their hard work, dedication and leadership in helping to put a lot of habitat on the ground. If you serve on a DU committee, there is no cost for attending. Raffles, etc will be done to pay for the meals but folks aren't obligated to spend a dime there (although I will tell you that there will be great prizes; I've seen the list).
If you are a current DU volunteer, you are more than welcome to attend. If you aren't a current DU volunteer, you really should consider becoming one. Wouldn't it be better to show future generations what a wetland looks like than have to describe to them what they used to look like?

Sorry to hijack the thread but this wont take long and maybe one of you will know or know someone who knows.
Does DU do anything with setting up habitat on say my personal property? If so, how much is needed for them to be interested in it?

As for the DU property thing... yes, there are some perameters that must be met. First step: go to DU.org, call the midwest office. They can tell you what to do. I do know that currently there is the Indiana Pothole initiative. DU also spent 700,000 dollars in north eastern IN, MI, and north western OH, a couple years back. Studied local mallard nesting success rates and related habitat. Now who's going to the par-tee?

Tom, It all depends on the location, importance to waterfowl, etc. I would suggest calling the DU Great Lakes Atlantic Regional Office at 734-623-2000 and ask for the Indiana Regional biologist. Since 97% of Indiana is in private hands and the ducks haven't learned to read yet, DU does work on private lands as long as it's beneficial to the ducks. I don't want to speak for them but they can help you more than anyone else in DU

THe District Conservationist will have info on possible cost share programs for habitat. They may also have a line on companies that need to mitigate wetland acreage. PM me if you need more info.

Purdue extension office also. From my experience. DU and other orgs like to do a joint venture type thing. Sometimes DU even will do the planning if you have access to a bull dozer: tell you what to do and leave. That is cost effective for both: you only have a little sweat equity in it.
