Great Bull! What state? How is it that a 30-06 is not enough gun, you said one shot right?

Took him in Arizona on the Apache Reservation. My shot was a little back and slight high. I am use to hitting white tails, you see a jump or some sort of body movement when they are hit. This bull showed nothing, just turned around and walked away. My guide said he was hit, seen the impact, after the shot he had his head down while we tracked him, seeing him twice before it got to dark. I can't explain how big these bulls are, when the mount shows up here I will post pics of me beside it. All the hunters in camp had custom guns in .300 win mag and bigger. Another hunter unloaded his rifle and reloaded before the bull crashed. Every shot he took was more than a kill shot. I have other pics of way bigger bulls, like a 454, plus bulls I took on film after my hunt and while I was scouting with my guide. Sorry so long

I do not wish to make this a argument but I will have to respectively disagree with the idea that a 30-06 is not enough gun. I believe had you made the same shot with a 300 win mag you still would have had the same results. I shot a Bull Elk one time at 40-50 yards with a 30-06 150 grain bullet, a perfect heart shot. The Bull never flinched. After the shot he just stood there looking around as if he was trying to figure out what all the noise was. After nearly a minute he got the wobbles and tipped over. They are very tough critters but they are mortal.
How does one get to hunt on the Apache reservation? Again, congrats on an awesome once in a lifetime Bull!

You are most likely right, this was my first bull elk ever, I was shooting 180 grain partitions. I guess maybe I expected a little more action when he was hit. Not letting go of my 30-06, even took it CO to elk hunt.

Sorry, forgot to answer rest of the question. The hunt was given to me, it's a very long story a couple of my friends here know it, but way to much to text. I know you can put in to hunt the reservation not 100% positive but I believe tags run $18 grand. Or you can bid on a hunt at the RMEF banquet. For me it was a once in a life time hunt, my first elk hunt, the first time I ever seen them in the wild, first time hearing them bugle, and being so close to them you cam see them slobber while they bugle.

Had a blast at Elk Camp last year, spent way to much money ;D Trying to set up to go this year, but I will make sure to check out the auction more closely. True, some things went high, but a lot went real cheap.
