How do you figure it's gonna be a "great" day? In my 33 years of hunting and keeping a journal for the last 20, I've killed more ducks & geese on bright "bluebird" days. Just cause it's gonna be a "nasty" day don't make it a "great" duck day! Friday was a nasty traditional duck day and we didn't see a duck or goose (we only stayed oout until noon). Saturday was the same though the wind I'm sure had a part. You ONLY stayed out till noon? Im sure that if we stayed out till noon on a cloudy day we'd kill 100 birds or more. But you've been hunting longer than I've been alive. What do I know?

I personally know someone who is a very successful goose hunter i would consider him a professional and he only hunts on cloudy days. I would take his word over anyone. And he has been doing it for over 30 yrs.

No need to stay away Oneshot.... Differences in opinion are welcome and are definately no reason to say off this site. IMO, if you are hunting a spot that ducks want to be in, it doesn't matter if its sunny/raining/lightning/tornado......they'll be trying to get into it. If you've clobbered more waterfowl on nice days, that's great. Like I always say, I'd rather at least go out and TRY even if the weather isn't a typical GREAT day than sit at home.

Hey Oneshot, I think you will find much less bickering here than on duckhunter.net.
Interesting figures you have. I generally have always wanted it to be cloudy. I snuck out for about an hour and a half yesterday in what I thought would be perfect weather and didn't see a thing. Had to try out the new robo duk I got for Christmas.

Hey Oneshot, I think you will find much less bickering here than on duckhunter.net. Oneshot....I have to agree with 10 point here. If your not one of the chosen few over there it can be brutal. Also, let me ask for some advice if you field hunted on clear sunny days and were successful. Maybe we can get together sometime and talk hunting. I just know my area here and 99% of my hunting waterfowl is from the field and if the suns shining I'm going to work. I believe if your hunting water clear days can be good but for field hunting, again my experience, if you want birds to come to the fields there best be overcast skies. I have seen them at times go to the fields with clear skies but it's usually right at or after sunset. Even with cloudy skies you still need to be where there's birds not like my hunt today. Lots of clouds and only heard one goose and seen two ducks.

Down south in the timber they love those clear blue bird skies, and that's been my experience, in the timber sunny days work great, for field hunting on clear skies it's over pretty quick, once that sun gets up very high and the low light burns off it's usually pretty tough! If you are hunting fields on clear skies, better have some motion in those decoys and be hid extremely well or in a pit blind, or you're going to get picked off. Now one pretty good situation for clear days is when there is a really good wind, and on open water, it seems the ducks work real well to that. But overall in Indiana, my ideal day is overcast or light mist with good wind, or even a light snowfall, and if it's going to be sunny, I want a stiff breeze! Good hunting!

For the most part I like bad weather, but I have had some really good days while my face is getting a sunburn. That goes for geese and ducks.

I have to restate my reply on "Beautiful Weather." I just wanted to say that the older I get the less I like gettin' out in the rain. My favorite day would be either a low 30s light snowing day or a bright cold (20s) day (and no later then 10:30 AM). I hunt ducks 95% and on the rivers & clear days seem to work better for me. I don't hunt "skycarps (resident geese ) in fields much. I do agree w/410 that cloudy days can be productive. When I was in my late teens/early 20s heck we'd go out no matter what the weather conditions, but now I'll give it up to these younger guys. I'm done w/the numbers game. It's just getting out and enjoying a good cup of joe, a nice imported cigar, a beautiful (P/C) sunrise and thinking of memories of my brother who passed away in '03. He was there w/me from the begining ('74). Go out and kill 'em boys! I'll be out Saturday (and maybe Sun. if it ain't RAINNING) so watch out! ;D By the way : How in the hell are you, Art? Virgil

Virg....It's been a while, I'm doing great. Glad to see you here and I hope you stay. Just to let you know these guys here ain't all that bad, except for a few of the waterfowl guys and you'll get to know who they are. ;D As your probably well aware I don't go over to the Refuge much anymore. I think I found a home here with these guys, especially some of the youngins. Were all here to tell stories (lies) and share our good and bad hunts with each other so don't be afraid to join in but don't take their crap. My old bud Duff is coming into town tomorrow and we're going to do a hunt so I'll be out tomorrow no matter the weather. I'm off until Wednesday so I'll be out there every day as long as the weather cooperates. Yep I'm looking forward to some freezing cold, rainy, snowy, sleeting windy days so I can get a few decent goose hunts in before the season ends. Talk to you soon and have a safe hunt tomorrow.

oneshot: I too enjoy a good cigar, maduras mostly. I'm also one of the ones who left the Refuge. I'm still new here, but I can tell things are better here. I stated in an earlier post that clear days can be good hunting. Well as long as it's cold out. I don't mind the sunburn face, but when I'm hunting in Dec and I'm wearing a short sleave shirt, that's not good.
