the other day we saw our first golden eyes of the season and like normal they just flew on by without giving our setup the first thought. and i wondered what does it take to get these birds to light in the spread? one of my goals has been to get one mounted but in 10+ years of waterfowl hunting ive never even had a single one give me a decent shot oppurtunity. i could try to sky bust one but thats not normanly how i roll. what does everyone else do to draw them in? normaly towards the end of the season i will see a couple houndred of them each time out.

I've shot goldeneyes with my normal mallard set up. Find where they are resting or feeding, and set up where they want to be. Only thing I know.

wow apparently all you need to do is talk about them to bag some. we ended up putting three of them in the boat this morning. i put a group of 4 drake spoonbill decoys in a tight group seperate from the rest of the ducks and that is where the goldeneyes wanted to be. all three were shot landing in with the deeks. in fact they didnt circle or anything. i used the spoonbill deeks due to having a similar color pattern. im going to get the hen and the drake on the right mounted togeather.

I will tell you this from hunting diver ducks. They like decoys with white on them. When it gets cold , I used to go on the river and use my rig kit, I used bufflehead decoys, they love all the white on them for some reason. and when we hunt small ponds we use the buffleheads and we usually kill our limit. Sounds like you had some birds that wanted to get in your decoys. Nice Drakes you have there. But i do know, the more white you have in your spread, bufflehead, and diver decoys with white, they can see them from far out, remember, they wing in pretty fast, so when they see the white, they head for them.
