I'm totally bummed with this year's timing of the break during duck and goose season here in the Central Zone. Duck ends today (12/23) and goose ends on Christmas day. Neither comes back in until after the first week of Jan..
I understand the dynamics of how the seasons are set but in years past typically once the season comes in during November they would run constant until mid-Jan for duck and late Jan for goose. I'm just unhappy that just when the kids get out of school for Christmas break, the season stops.....and seemingly goes back in right when they go back to school! I just wish the IDNR would put more focus on giving kids every opportunity to get hooked on hunting and be conscious of when kids are most available to hunt... I'll be sending an email to Adam Phelps just to voice my opinion.

Travis I know how you feel but for every guy who feels the same as you there is a hunter and probably his wife too that is glad that the season is closed during the Christmas holidays. I have always thought the same as you and felt there should be a few days of waterfowl hunting during the Christmas holidays especially after Christmas so children can get a chance to try out hunting stuff they got for Christmas. This year we got that season however the temperature here right now 13 degrees and couple that with the fact that we don't have many ducks your not missing a thing if you hunt the north zone. I would be willing to say that by tomorrow all or most of the duck blinds on state properties will frozen shut.
Th waterfowl biologists can not predict the weather or the fall migration they can only try to set dates according to patterns and this year as well as the past few years that has been very difficult to do. Hang in there this week off might be a blessing for your zone because it might push what few ducks we have/or did have down your way in time for your second split. BTW the weather forecast for the next week has temps below freezing everyday except one.

i think the dates for the north zone were perfect. however they sure droped the ball on the central zones dates. wow did they get it wrong. normaly in our area the last week of december and first week of january are the best time to hit it hard. when the preliminary dates came out on the new zones it looked as if they were going to time it perfect. then when the final plan came out i couldnt believe that the week of christmas break for kids the season was closed.

That pretty much sums it up for you north zoners...cub fans ;D Are not happy unless you are having a miserable season Just came back from the dreaded barren tundra of northern Laport County and sorry to say I was happy to sit inside and drink the egg nog this year. No birds anywhere. Father-n-law has a house on Lower Fish Lake and there were maybe 25 geese on the ice, 2 mute swans and 30 gulls. There was a group of hunters giving it heck though as I watched the same empty skies while eating Christmas cookies and thinking how bad the Cubs suck Merry Christmas!

I said the same thing in the WEATHER thread. I really don't like the Central Zone dates this season.
"I don't like how they got rid of the week in October. That was our wood duck time. I also don't like how they started season early for the Central Zone. What's a deer hunter supposed to do when they open ducks right when the rut is turning on.
Last year everyone was screaming to keep it open later, so they open it earlier. Sure makes sense. Now season is out and we have new ducks. Hoping the week in January will be a good one. Give us the week in October, start the season on Thanksgiving, and end it on January 31st. Just my opinion."

i honestly think the wood ducks need to come in along with teal. and i SERIOUSLY dont know what they were thinking about when they put the split between dec 25th and jan 14th. that is by far the best time around here! i know ive said it before but it just frustrates the hell out of me.

I too like the idea of Wood duck-Teal season.

As I'm sure you know the problem is wood ducks are still at their nesting ground during teal season. Since we're a nesting state, my guess is that they'll never allow us to shoot them that early. But there are a TON around during that time.
