We as duck hunters are always watching the weather probably more so than any other type of hunting. We get excited when the weatherman starts talking of strong NW winds and snow. Well that forecast is on tap for the next day or two for us in the north zone. The last few days I have been driving around checking areas that historically hold ducks during a split at this time of the year and it looks awfully bleak. I for one have been looking for a late season during the Christmas holidays and no matter what happens I will take the good with the bad and as of right now it's not looking GOOD. Judging by the reports from other states north of us there isn't much left to come our way. For the last few years ducks have gone out of their way to avoid Indiana so lets all join hands around the Christmas tree and ask Santa for a few ducks and maybe some geese to show up.

However I cant complain. Although I pretty new to duck hunting I've had some pretty good hunts just about everytime I've been out.

That is for sure. You have to be out there to kill any! Unfortunately for me it seems to get harder and harder to get out there anymore.

I've got work to do today, but my buddies are out right now. They did some scouting at first light and saw maybe 100 birds flying. They should have a good hunt today if they shoot straight. 2 days ago one of them shot a banded Mallard Drake that was banded 7-11-2012 in Vilas County, Wi. When banded, the bird was too young to fly.

It's been off and on for me. I don't like how they got rid of the week in October. That was our wood duck time. I also don't like how they started season early for the Central Zone. What's a deer hunter supposed to do when they open ducks right when the rut is turning on.
Last year everyone was screaming to keep it open later, so they open it earlier. Sure makes sense. Now season is out and we have new ducks. Hoping the week in January will be a good one. Give us the week in October, start the season on Thanksgiving, and end it on January 31st. Just my opinion.
