Season is pretty done on my farm so I am making plans for 2013. Gonna open back up couple of mineral lick site's. Applying some lime to all plot's and weather permitting gonna plow up another couple acre's sod which will be planted to corn in spring. Put out about 1.5 acre's corn last year and not only did it do well but the deer pounded it so gonna give them 3.5 acre's to feed on for next fall. Also gonna evaluate stand site's and probably move a couple. Also put trail game's over mineral site's and try to see what buck's made it through hunting season. 2012 was a great season for me harvested 3 doe's and 1 mid 120's 8 point with bow. The hunting here has gotten better and better each yr. I believe the mgt plan we use and the increased number and size of food plot's make's the deer flock to our property.

How many acres are you working with? What do you figure you spend per acre on the corn?

Farm consist's of 150 acre's. 90 wooded 50 tillable 10 pasture. I limed all the tillable last year at the rate of 2 tons per acre . I got my seed corn free from a dealer who gave me several bag's of sample's. I put 300 lbs fertilizer and an additional 500 lbs lime on the 1.5 acre's corn. So i'd guess 125-150 acre. Most of the cost being the fertilizer. All the tillable acreage is grass hay with the exception of 6 acre's alfalfa and 4 acre's of imperial whitetail clover and another acre of mixed oat's, turnip's chickory. I'd guess the corn produced approx 80 bushel per acre.

Did you put N2 on the corn? I'm curious how you manage the mineral licks to make the 90 acres huntable??

Of course. What i've always done with mineral lick's is put out after season (or once i'm done hunting property for year) and leave until end august/first september. Remove all visable mineral and cover with dirt. I feel I've made an honest effort to remove mineral from site. (I also don't hunt over any of the sight's per se.) Never had a problem in my 34 yr's of hunting. I also have a site in my horse pasture, which is left year round for the livestock.

I'm surprised your getting ears on your corn without N2.

I could be wrong but doesn't N2 come from the atmosphere? For my wildlife corn fields I go by soil test and rent a buggie with bulk fertilizer for the P & K and have them mix in bags of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) as needed.

I believe I will be doing the same after this weekend. Have a guest coming from georgia and I believe I will be done at the one farm. Thinking about doing some tilling, cutting and prep work on stands and two elevated blinds.
get a ahead on 2013, I too also put out mineral after season. I like the red stuff from Rural king, put it in a old kitty litter jug with water and let it soak, then pour on. Seems the deer tear it up better.
I will say I used some sample mineral packs from Whitetail Institutes and the deer TORE it up. just cost too much LOL

I broadcast 250 lbs 15-15-15 then disk in 2 week's before planting then applied another 250 lbs 24-6-6 (I believe) dry fert. with the planter in the corn row's with the seed. This was the first year trying corn and was pleased with result's. So gonna expand to 3 maybe 4 acre's for 2013. Allready picked up 5 bag's of test seed from dealer and he said he get me some more this spring.
