These are a few ducks here on the lake at our resort in Florida. I say these are Hooded Mergansers(sp?) and a friend thought they were Buffleheads. Also is there such a thing as a Greater and Lesser Mergansers? My friend, who used to duck hunt 30 years ago, said he thought the mergansers were bigger ducks than these. We know that these are mallards. Is the bottom duck a different color or just a young drake?

The top picture is definitely hooded mergies. Pretty birds, but not very tasty, IMO. The bottom duck might be a cross breed between a mallard and a black. It is getting more and more common, but usually they are darker then that. It would be possible for it to be a juvi mallard drake, but even this late in the year the juvi's usually have fairly full plumage. Best way to I.D. that duck is to shoot him and let us all get a better look at him.

Yup - Hoodies
Eclipse drake mallard or possibly a cross with a domestic duck. I think not a blackduck as they usually go darker as opposed to lighter in color when that happens. Anything is possible of course. If it is a cross, it need to be out of the gene pool!!!!!!

It kinda looks like a drake mallard that is not fully matured yet. Look at the beak, breast and tail feathers. Travis remember some of the drakes we kill at Mt. comfort they kinda looked like that

I'm rethinking the cross with a black. Typically a cross with a black will be darker and will have the dark bill that a black has.
It does look like a juvi, but this late in the year even juvi's typically have better plumage. Anything is possible I guess.
I got into several juvi's that looked very similar to that a couple years ago here in our first Oct. weekend.
