So I took a long weekend from work and am planning on hunting Thursday through Sunday. I noticed today that winds in my area are going to be in the 20-25 mph range. I have never hunted in anything like this. Does anyone have any extra advice or success hunting in high winds?

Keep an eye out for falling branches. Hunt the downwind side of the woods, and in the lee of hilly terrain where the wind isn't as bad.
When it's windy out I'll see deer at the edges of the fields, eating, but always on the downwind side of the woods.

The wind almost always dies down right before last light, Get Ready deer love moving then. I've seen it many times.

When winds are that high the deer usually hunker down... you can use this time to your advantage... they will usually try to find a place that is protected from the wind... when it is really windy they can't hear well enough to pick up single noises and they have a hard time smelling... if you have a standing corn field, you can use the wind to your advantage... the rustling leaves of the corn will cover your sound, keep the wind in your face and look for grassy areas in the cornfield where they may bed... I've never pulled off a successful cornfield stalk before, but I got close a couple of times...

Hi wind actually help you from being zeroed in on. Deer can not pin pont your location, but are normally on alert for movement. Hunt higher if you'r in a climber. Strap in.

When faced with a breezy day of hunting deer I hunt the low areas where the wind is not as bad.

Generally the only time that I have seen &/or killed deer in high winds has been during the search/chase phase of the rut.

High winds are the norm in western Indiana and Illinois. Deer movement isn't effected by them because wind is always there and constant.

Ive lived in western Indiana my entire life and would definitely say that high winds are not the norm.
Not really unusual but not normal either.
I hunted yesterday afternoon in the 30+mph winds and didnt expect to see all that much ..... I wasnt wrong. Saw a doe and a yearling.

I don't have a whole lot of experience hunting in high winds. Last year during opening weekend of firearms, winds were really bad and we had higher than normal temps. In a woods where I consider myself very lucky to see 1 deer, throughout the day I had 4 different groups of deer come in on me. The deer were very skittish and were on high alert. They didn't seem to stay in the same spot for very long, but that could have been the push from other hunters as well, being opening weekend and all.

I would not go higher in high winds. The higher you go the more the tree will sway. Not only is it more dangerous, it is also much more likely that you will make a bad shot on an animal due to the swaying.

Some people make bad shots when it's calm. That is very true. My dog likes to eat popcorn.

15 or over sustained with gusts of 25 or more .... never really thought to put a number to it. We have more calm(er) days on a typical year than windy days.
Last year was the exception .... seemed the wind blew every day.
