I have a buddy from work that's taking his 2 boys for their first hunt and is asking what to expect. He's never been either. I love it that he's going and I would accompany them but it's a 2 hour drive. Anyone else going? Ever been? Good chance at getting his boy a bird or 2?

I would not worry about taking more than about a dozen duck decoys and maybe 4 goose decoys. Take life jackets as well as cushions and maybe an extra oar because some are pretty rough. Take at least 2 flash lights and keep the guns cased while rowing because it will be very difficult to row since you will be the first ones that are going to blazing the trail this year. The adult should wear chest waders and the boys can wear boots. Try to drop all your birds down dead and close to the blind because it will be real dense in there. I wouldn't stay past 11:00am because by the boys will get board and by that time the shooting will be over. Now from what I have seen it will be a Teal, Wood duck shoot and it will be crazy because there are a lot of them here this year.

My Son's first duck hunt was at the Kank and he got 2 teal that morning. He was only like 7 and he water swatted them. It was fun and we saw lots of woodies. I assume the water might be low. If we wouldn't have had someone guiding us that knew the property somewhat we would have never found the blind. That year the skeeters were awful.

One more thing I forgot to mention.
They might try and get into a blind in the first 2 units because they get water first. Sometimes the third unit can be a low water nightmare trying to row a 14' boat around in the dark. Also don't waste any time getting to your blind because they are hard to locate in a flooded woods in the middle of the night for the first time. GOOD LUCK!

They ended up scratching 2 woodies and a ruddy duck.
I think they're hooked...

Sounds like they had a good time. Did they happen to mention how many birds there were or how the water conditions were.

There was water. And he's saying there were a lot of birds flying. Ducks and geese.
Did you guys get any of the winds and rain on Sunday AM that we got over here in central Illinois? I tried to take my boy to Heidecke Lake near Morris and they had it closed down due to high winds. We were going to chance the low water level at the boat ramp and hunt the south shore with a SSW wind but they locked it down. I knew the winds were coming but didn't plan to stay long enough to get caught in them.
