Was squirrel hunting and found a yearling doe in the creek. Not a mark on her, tongue hanging out. So called the wildlife biologist, and they are no longer testing for EHD. But since she was in the creek they are counting her as suspected EHD. There was one confirmed case in Miami County about 3 weeks ago, just about 10 miles away from our property, so our doe is #2. Cass county is getting hit hard, over 30 cases and also some cases in Fulton county, but he didn't say how many. Will be praying for a hard frost soon!

BTW, I saw this today from Chad Stewart and apparently we are dealing with a couple of different strains of EHD this time......
Amid widespread reports of dead deer being found around the state, DNR deer management biologist Chad Stewart said today that laboratory tests have identified a deadly virus as the culprit in four counties.
EHD, or epizootic hemorrhagic disease, was confirmed in samples collected from dead deer in LaGrange, Miami, Morgan and Sullivan counties. In addition, the State Board of Animal Health has identified EHD at captive cervid facilities in Adams, Marshall, Putnam and Vanderburgh counties and in cattle in Ripley County.
"Our list is over 40 counties now where it has been reported or suspected in deer," Stewart said.
Although citizen reports to the DNR of dead deer were consistent with EHD episodes of past years, Stewart was cautious until lab tests were complete in order to rule out the possibility of bluetongue, a disease similar to EHD that affects mainly sheep but also cattle, goats, deer and other ruminants.
The final lab report was received this week from the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia. Other samples were tested at Purdue University.
The tests confirmed two strains of the virus - EHD V-2 and EHD V-6.
"Basically, 10 years ago we didn't have the EHD V-6 strain in Indiana," Stewart said. "It's just recently been documented, so it's still relatively new on the landscape. It may be an explanation for some of these harder hit pockets."
In addition to the counties where EHD is confirmed, Stewart said the virus is suspected in reports of dead deer in Adams, Bartholomew, Brown, Cass, Carroll, Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Dubois, Elkhart, Fayette, Franklin, Gibson, Hendricks, Henry, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Marion, Monroe, Ohio, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Porter, Posey, Putnam, Randolph, Ripley, Shelby, Spencer, Steuben, Switzerland, Tippecanoe, Union, Vermillion and Warrick counties.
"If it's not as bad this year as it was in 2007, it's getting close," Stewart said, noting an outbreak five years ago in which EHD was reported in 59 Indiana counties and confirmed by lab tests in 17. "We did a lot more testing and confirming in 2007. This year we're lying back because the tests are so expensive and we know what it is."

A doomsayer is calling this "Theeeee Perfect Storm". Deer are very resilient. They will bounce back. See Page 11 in the 2007 DNR Deer Report.... www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-2007_Deer_Season_Report.pdfMight be tough hunting in some areas and hunters should use wise judgement on how this effects their area before deciding what to shoot...

And that's exactly right. Use good judgement on what you kill this season in the effected areas as it will take some time for the deer numbers to rebound.

There is going to be a LOT more "deer hunting" than "deer shooting" in some areas..

There is going to be a LOT more "deer hunting" than "deer shooting" in some areas.. I don't disagree, but you can't control EHD. But....as you said earlier, numbers will rebound.

Not just this season but probably a couple more seasons. I have been pretty selective in my area since 2007, but the herd has made a remarkable comeback since the 07 outbreak. I still have yet to see any signs of EHD in my area this year. I have heard of people finding dead deer here in Pike County, but none around here. I do know that Pike was thought to be one of, if not the hardest hit county in 07 in the state.

When I talked to wildlife biologist in Sept, he mentioned Lake Cicott. So I'm guessing that the total EHD toll in these counties is not fully known. If you find deer please report to Wildlife Biologist. I hope that dnr takes note and reduces doe tags next year. So far this season I have continued to see deer in Marshall, Miami and Fulton County driving, including a very nice basket 8 last night that decided not to take my car out at the last moment. (I had slowed but didn't see him at first so unsure if I'd missed him if he had come across the road) In the stand I have not seen one deer, but hubby did see one doe the one time he went. Still seeing tracks and rubs.......they are out there but I'm just not finding them as of yet.

I have some property to hunt on the NE corner of cass/fulton when I come down, hoping the population will be good in that area anyhow.

I don't know if it was the drought or EHD but the deer count in Posey Co. is less than half of what I seen last year.
