brushbuck: once again thanks for posting this thread because I just went and checked my favorite hot spot and within minutes I found 2,one the size of a basketball and the other about the size of a mush ball. I spotted a couple others the size of a baseball that I will leave for later this week.

raporter you know what they say, shroom hunters would sooner die then give up a secret spot but I will give you a hint ..............south of Lake Michigan and north of the Kankakee river.

Cut that puffball in slices about the size of a slice of bread, remove the skin, put some olive oil in a frying pan with some minced garlic then fry those slices till golden brown.

I've never gathered much in the way of fall mushrooms but after learning about the meadow mushrooms this year I'm going to broadening my searches. Never looked for hen of the woods-looks like these are actually on a rotten log...is that typical? irishhunter-make sure that puffball is good and white on the inside!! If they are starting to turn any kind of yellow or have a lot of dark spots they're not gonna be something that's worth eating!! We've also made "steak fries" out of them and dipped in Drake's then deep fried them-YUM!

dadfsr: you will in most cases (99% of the time) locate hen's around the base of mature oak trees. These mushrooms can range in size from the size of a baseball to a hen that will be as big as a bushel basket. For the most part they will look like a Grouse sitting next to a tree and they also usually grow in a ball shape. Some hens can be light tan in color to dark brown. My advise is to stay away from anything that grows on a log or is orange in color. Several years ago when I decided to get into mushroom hunting I bought a book called 100 EDIBLE MUSHROOMS by MICHAEL KUO it not only goes into great detail but it also shows you poisonous look-alikes. BTW went out again this morning and found 2 more about the size of a volleyball.

Ended up looking mostly at the webpage that Kuo has-very informative!!! and yes that book is now on my very short "WANT" list!!!! (See that Dan?? ;D ;D) I figure I'll take a walk when I get home and see what I can find. Pretty much know my woods and trees like the back of my hand so it shouldn't take me too long.

I usually find one every year on my property at the base of a growing Sugar Maple tree. Last year the 'shroom weighed 17#.

I took a long walk in my woods yesterday afternoon but didn't find any of these. Was going to stop by and get the head from the possible EHD buck I found last week but already had poachers that had cut the antlers off...grrrr!!!! Makes me wonder if I also had shroom's too...
Guess it's time to hide some trail cams again!!
