Has anyone ever flocked their own decoy heads, was it hard to do, does it hold up well? Can you make some recommendations.

Nope never tried it. I've seen new BF at Gander Mtn that had flocked heads for the same price I paid for mine. I'm considering selling all mine after this year and get all new. They may be in the front lawn next spring/summer for sale as lawn ornaments.

410 I'd stick with the unflocked heads unless your very careful not to get any mud on them, mud on a flocked head doesn't come off easily like it does with plain heads. I bought some last year and hunted a few muddy fields and spent just as much time cleaning heads as I did hunting. I for one don't care for them.

So far, I've never hunted over flocked heads. We hunt over Big Feet with the original heads and older shells. We still kill our share of birds.
I think the flocked heads definately add an element of realism to the spread. Is it enough though to make a large difference in putting meat on the ground though? I don't know.
My personal opinion about flocking is that it is just one more thing that I would have to worry about. It seems fragile to me, unless you individualy bag the decoys and that seems like a pain. We hunt over anywhere from 6 to 9 dozen big feet at a times. I can not imagine being that careful with all the decoys. One of the beauties about Big Feet is that you can pile them in a trailer and not really damage them. Flocked heads would be counter productive in that regard.
Dirt is another factor as well. Decoys get dirty enough, whether it is from mud in the fields or dust settling from driving down dirt roads. I'll take a slick head decoy for cleaning purposes any day.

I'd like the thank the flocked headed dekes Kyle provided on opening day for helping me kill my goose! They really do look awesome, so much brighter and sharp than the dull black shells that I brought.

as for toughness; I hunted with my flocked headed shells yesterday and casually tossed them in the back of my truck with no problems to the heads. I did smack one pretty good against the corner of the cap where its pretty sharp and it left a mark on the head but it's not noticeable unless you know where it is.

Travis I am still waiting for my check! ;D Anyway the big difference in the flocked heads is when there is snow on the ground.

To answer your question, I understand that it is not that hard to do. Mostly time consuming. I guess the key is getting the heads clean. Then using the right products like a good exterior grade flocking and the correct adhesive. I highly recommend you go over to refugeforums.com/refuge/ and run a search on flocking decoys. These guys are die hard waterfowlers and many have done it themselves. You can pick up some great tips. Good luck.

Ok. How about the trailer? Heck while I'm at it I may as well get all new blinds. It sure would make you a great starter kit.
