Becareful of what fields you hunt this year with the drought. Received a email from the dnr about baiting for waterfowl.

Glad you brough this up; I got the same e-mail. It mentioned it's illegal to hunt in a field that was harvested before the "recommended harvest period". So if a local farmer has either chopped corn for sileage or shelled it much earlier than normal due to the drought a hunter can get into trouble if they are hunting in it? What defines "recommended harvest period"? Seems to me the term baiting would be used incorrectly here. If you had the farmer dump a pile of grain to attract waterfowl then yeah that should be illegal...otherwise I think this law ought to be re-examined

I think they were referring when they disk it up also, since that is not natural harvest.

We had a couple fields that were questionable and contacted the local c/o. He advised, as long as the crop was harvested from the field in some manner he didnt see an issue. An example was a corn field was mowed down and then baled to feed catle. He said as long as it wasnt left in the field and the farmer utilized it we were ok to hunt. Not sure if all c/o's will agree, so when questionable I would contact them and ask.

Good advice. That email they sent out was not very helpful but it did raise some eyebrows. thanks for the update.

There was an article in the NRA mag American Hunter a few months ago that talked about all of the confusion and gray area in the "baiting" rules on the federal level. Might be worth a read if you can find it. I believe Kyle Wintersteen was the author, he seems to be the waterfowl guy in that mag.

Oh, I have read a lot on the subject. For the most part it is pretty cut and dry but there are wrinkles that can trip up even the most ethical guys out there.
