Found a couple in my yard yesterday then drove into town this morning and passed a field with horses in it and there were mushrooms everywhere. Hope those people know what they have.

What exactly do they have. Never heard of a meadow mushroom I think they are those big white puffball mushrooms. One must be very careful, when picking mushrooms, as some are posisonous. Eating these posisonous mushrooms could mean a liver transplant.

I never knew about them either until the guy that lets me hog hunt his land down around Bedford fixed some for us a couple of weeks ago when I was down there. They had had over 4" of rain the week before I was down there and there were meadow mushrooms popping up everywhere according to him. They had battered and fried them....yum, yum and YUM!!! So as I was coming back out of the woods this afternoon from squirrel hunting (got two fox squirrels!) what do I see but meadow mushrooms in a couple of spots along the edge of the woods. So I laid down the rifle and the squirrels and proceeded to pick a hat full of them. I'm now thoroughly stuffed!!! Wife hadn't had them before either-said I can bring more back the next time I see some

Thanks for the link, raporter. I've also seen these puffballs in the market, but never ate any as I don't eat mushrooms. Lot of folks sometimes pick the "wrong" type muchrooms thinking they are safe to eat, then that is when they get into trouble.

Just make sure when you pick them they are pink to pinkish brown underneath. If they are white don't mess with them.

RAPORTER, While I was reading this thread I remembered some white mushrooms I was kicking around out in the yard the other day. After reading the discription closely, (pink gills) I went out and found 3 small ones. The wife was a little leary, but rolled them in flour and fried them in bacon grease for me. Those babies are GOOD! She even tried one and was impressed. I won't be stomping those anymore. And Woody, they are a world of difference from "road apples"! Thanks again RA.

Just went out and picked another hat full. Will use these on some homemade pizza dough along with some garden fresh tomato slices, some garden fresh pepper slices and some left over roast pork shoulder that I smoked.....totally expect to be stuffed again tonight ;D
Have never tried drying any mushrooms but I think will be enough to try that too.

After the little bit of rain we had a week ago the puffballs popped up. I had a few, but was too late getting to many of them, and they were too soft.
I'll keep my eyes open for more after the next rain, whenever that might be!

I picked another "short" hat full last night (from back in the old pasture) since it was just me home for supper....but realized that I had at least one growing right off my back deck when got back-figures!

I get those in my yard pretty good this time of year. When I lived back east they called them "pinkies". Been eating those since I was a kid.

Just drove from Patoka to Jasper and there are mushrooms growing in just about every yard on the way. I've got mushrooms growing in my backyard too which are large enough to be easily spotted from the road HOWEVER they are NOT meadow mushrooms!!! Kind of doubt that most meadow mushrooms could be that easily spotted from the road at highway speed...at least I wouldn't be able too ;D
