I acquired a piece of property I've been drooling over for a couple of years now. The land owner tells of 20 to 30 geese that roost there every night and more green piles than he can step over.
I'm torn with the idea of slipping out there in the morning and getting a few as they leave or wait until the afternoon when they come back. My thought was to get them leaving and not go near the place in the afternoons so they will continue to return. Either way I'm not going to shoot it up too much until the Youth Weekend in October. He has around 50 woodies calling the place home with 30 or so mallards.

Well firstwd......we'd need to "see" this property and "test" it to truly give you a good answer for your question! It just depends on the property......how much water are we talking? If it were me, I wouldn't be overly concerned with ruining it no matter which way you hunt it. Eventually these resident geese will have their migrating kin coming down in waves....so theoretically you should have a "fresh" supply of waterfowl coming in. If it's a good place that the waterfowl are wanting to get into, you shouldn't worry too much about spooking them. Just don't hunt it every day......just a time or two per week. I would definately hunt it in the morning....try to knock them down as they head off to feed.....and then stick around. They might be back sooner than you think. Geese don't follow a game plan of leaving in the morning and then returning late in the day.....they can get up, fly around and stretch their wings and come right back in 10 minutes. Don't get caught up in trying to "pattern" them......other than trying to find out where the do go if you want to expand your hunting opportunities. Good luck.......there are several of us that can help ya out if you need it hunting that property! LOL.

Well, the morning worked out prety well. I almost screwed up severly though. With the thick fog, I didn't see (or hear) any geese and I almost shot a teal when I caught a patch of white to my left. I did manage two geese. With 2 3/4 number 7 steel. Like I said, I almost shot a Teal.
The pond ia about 4 acres i a horse show pattern. I think it will be great for hunts with the kids and a back up spot when family comes in from Kentucky. The widest patch of water is right at 40 yards bank to bank.
