Meet Woodsy the Owl, make crafts, play games and win prizes at the fourth annual International Migratory Bird Day on May 20th at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area. "Habitats on the Hoosier" is hosted by the Hoosier National Forest and begins at 7:30 a.m.
"A variety of opportunities from crafts to games to live raptor shows will be offered providing a great learning experience for anyone who attends," said Cindy Basile, Wildlife Biologist on the Hoosier National Forest. "Families will enjoy a day together outdoors while learning about the many species of Indiana birds."
Families will have the opportunity to build nest boxes, create bird feeders, design binoculars, identify birds from a birding blind and participate in games. Guest speakers will present workshops throughout the day on topics such as a mist netting demonstration, bird identification, and an update on the Indiana Saw Whet Owl project. Woodsy the Owl will kick off a bird-calling contest over lunch. Children will be able to decorate banners and enter them into a competition. Winning banners will be displayed in downtown Mitchell, Indiana.
The day-long event, located south of Lake Monroe on State Road 446, begins with guided bird hikes at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Workshops will begin at 9:30 and be held every hour while activities booths will be open from 11 - 4. The event concludes with prizes and awards at 4:30.The event is free, but there is a $2 parking fee at Hardin Ridge (make sure you mention you are with IMBD to get this discount).
