I remember Carrol very well when I lived in Calfornia. I used to pit for a friend that road raced motorcycles. He ran a Norton Manx (queens court) that was one of the best in its day. The held the motorcycle races in conjunction with auto road races. Carrol brought his very first Cobra to a race at Riverside. He was the pace car for the A production car ( Vetts, Jags, Porches, etc) race. From the stands and pits we could not see the back stretch. AlASIC a sudden the Cobra came into view and he closest car to him was 200 yards back . They couldnt even keep up with his pace.
I should have bought one back then, but I was only making about $75 a week.

Carroll Shelby was an absolute American Icon, and he will be missed. For those here in Indiana with an appreciation of Carroll Shelby's creations, the Indiana Region of the Shelby American Automobile Club will be hosting its 35th annual Spring Fling Car show in Brown County State Park on May 19th. If you'd like to view the largest gathering of vintage Shelby Mustangs outside the National convention it's worth the trip. Rest in Peace Carroll Shelby

RIP Mr. Shelby. You made some kick ass cars. I have heard there are more Shelby Cobra Mustangs in existence today then were actually produced. Yes though there are many cloned Shelby Mustangs on the streets it is very difficult to fake an original car. The early Shelby Mustangs had a Shelby VIN # printed into a plate that was attached over the original Ford VIN of the Mustang body. SAAC has those FORD VIN #'s on file, and those #'s are confidential. By 1969 Shelby Mustangs had their own unique VIN #'s differentiating Shelby Mustangs from regular production cars, so Shelby no longer covered the Ford VIN with a stamped plate. For many years SAAC has published the Shelby World Registry which lists each car built. From early Cobras, to Ford GT 40's, to each Shelby Mustang built from 1965 through 1969. The 1970 Shelby Mustangs were reserial #ed 69's. A person can look up the VIN for each car and find the orignal selling dealer, and any warranty work done on the cars. For most cars several owners are listed as well. All Ford cars have dates stamped on each component piece of sheetmetal that will coincide with the build dates of the cars. Therefore it is easy to find a rebodied car by close examination of these stamped dates throughout the unibody of the car. It is sjmply not cost effective to attempt to fake one of these cars.
