What kind of calls do you guys use? I just got my Foiles SMH goose call and have been learing to blow that. And have been learning to call ducks on a Buck Gardner Double Nasty II. Anyone know how to tune a goose call or where I can find instructions on how to do so?

For gosh sakes, “DON”T TAKE IT APART”. Not really they are fairly easy to tune if you can find someone to show you how. There may be but I don't know of anything, video or graphic, instructions available that shows you how to tune one. I have three of them now and had some guy who I did a hunt with show me how to tune them. I almost crapped myself when he took it and broke it down after I told him I didn't like the way it sounded.

You can send it back to jeff in the off season. He'll re-tune any one of his calls for life! Better yet if you find one of his booths at any outdoor event he or one of his guys will do it for you on the spot. I beleive the Illinois state calling contest will be coming up soon and he'll be there for sure.

If you would like we can meet and I can show you how I tuned mine, I live just up the road in Pendleton. He is as close to Jeff Foils as I have seen ;D But you'd better ask his son to do the tuning! 410 will make your calls sound like a goose on helium. Just kidding he will set you up right unless you are hunting in the field next to him

I have a Zink SR-1 here that I mainly use. Here's how to tune one courtesy of www.performancecalls.com . They make a sweet "fast talker" also: Standard Tuning - Standard tuning of a goose call will have a call playing to 90% of your calling ability's potential. The standard way to tune a call is to manipulate the guts and reed. Place the reed on top of the tone board so the tip of the reed can be barely pushed down into the tone board. Now place your wedge down to roughly 1/16 below where the reeds taper stops. Now push this whole setup down into the insert until the wedge is roughly 1/16-18 of an inch of the wedge is sticking out. Double check that the reeds tip barely drops down into the tone board. The smaller the gap between the trough in the tone board and your reed, the more efficient your call will play. Fine tuning a call to your calling style - You can tune a call to play higher or lower in pitch. If you want your call to play deeper you can move the wedge assembly out a little ways or you can make the portion of the reed longer. Remember though that the tip of the reed must fall into that tone channel. If it does not, the call will not break over. Now that your call is 90% tuned, you can try super tuning your call if you are proficient on it. Manipulating the guts of a goose call You can change the pitch of a goose call by moving the guts in or out of the insert. The farther into the insert you press the guts, the higher pitched the call will play. The farther out you have the guts pushed into the insert, the deeper the call will play. This is assuming we are using the same reed placement in relationship to the guts. Also the looser the guts are inside the insert, the lower in pitch a call will play. You can achieve this by shaving the wedge down. This is a very touchy situation as if the guts do not fit tight enough, they will come un-tuned very easy. Shaving the wedge is best left to very experienced call tuners that no exactly what they are looking to get out of there call in the areas of pitch and tone.

Thanks gobbler. I almost have it back to where it was when I got it.
Anyone looking for someone to join them on a hunt this week? Im hoping to get out again before the seasons over, I just dont have a place or the right equipment (decoys) to be sucessful. ( I have a finisher blind, a gun, and enough shells to shoot though ;D).

No problem bud. When I bought my SR-1 I was ready to drive back to BPS in Clarksville and try to get my money back. I shortened the reed a little and now I love the call. Just took a little getting used to.

I use acrylic RNT duck calls: Original & Daisy Cutter. On the goose call frontier I've been experimenting with: Zinks SR-1(sold), a couple of wood Winglocks, 2 acrylic TG Supermags (my goto calls as of now), a RNT/KP acrylic and soon to have in my sweaty hands a acrylic RNT G2. I'm still experimenting - all it takes is money!

Got a couple of calls I use: a Buck Gardner double reed as a diver call. A Timber wolf single reed. I prefer single reeds for mallard sounds. and the one I use most- a combo whistle. Grunt into it and make the male mallard sound... really brings in the birds. A flambo goose call works well for me. Now that being said, different calls work well for different people. My 12 yr old son really can belt it out on a Quack head call and a old nag. I sound a little goofy on the nag. A combination of getting familiar with the call and the call settling to you will bring better sounds.

Now that you showed your call to a couple of the guys I think we figured out what the problem is. It's got the way too high pitched sound, you know like a girly goose and not the manly man sound. Maybe they'll let you trade it for lavender, that would be pretty. ;D

Sorry rookie, but it's called Mallard Green. It don't spook birds like that sweet pink does. ;D You should have taken notice how nice the birds were working down into our spread until you pulled out your call.

I noticed duff's mint green call though. I guess its not fair to bust on him right now though, his wife is making him cook and clean I bet. ;D
On a more serious note, I blew on that call when I got home and it split all the way down to the silver ring. Hopefully they'll just replace it with acrylic for me.
