A few weeks back I came across 3 issues of a small booklet published monthly by the state of Indiana called OUTDOOR INDIANA. The following is from the November 1961 issue regarding the 1960 Indiana game harvest.
The total kill of upland game birds and mammals in 1960 was 4,089,646 as compared to 4,935,504 in 1959.
During the 1960 60 day squirrel season 1,391,499 gray and fox squirrels were bagged.
The 1960 rabbit kill totaled 1,817,639 down from 2,243,444 from the previous 10 year average.
The Bobwhite kill dropped from 1,079,335 in 1959 to 764,193 in 1960. The average kill for the past ten years has been 815,374.
The Pheasant kill of nearly 110,000 birds only represents a slight decrease from 114,000 in 1959.
The annual duck harvest was 105,186 in 1959 to 76,661 in 1960 down 27 percent.
The annual goose harvest increased from 8,662 in 1959 to 10,130 up 14 per cent.
I cannot imagine even seeing that many rabbits, quail and pheasants. I started hunting about this time and do remember that as a kid growing up in Gary I could get on my bike and ride any where from 1 to 4 miles and almost always see or kill rabbits, pheasants and quail.

I remember my mom having a subscription to that neat little magazine. When I was a kid, I used to read it cover to cover.
