Today I decided to make things a little more challenging, my hunting partner (a rookie) decided to put up the auto's and broke out th TK 2000 muzzleloading shotguns. We had a limit of Widgeon and Gadwall in about 2 hours. That banded goose in the picture, well guess who shot it? Yep you guessed it the rookie, his first ever goose! Man I love that beginners luck. I don't believe I've ever had a more fulfilling hunt.

Sounds like quite a challenge and a great way to break in (and set the hook on) a "rookie".
Congratulations to both of you..

Quackhead: Funny that you might ask as I did get a double, two birds in one shot!
Duff: I was shooting 110 gr of APP under a 3.5" Knight wad with 735 gr of #2 shot. This was the first time shooting a muzzleloader at ducks and I was a little apprehensive but after yesterday I might just put up the SBE and shoot that smokepole the rest of the season. We never even had a cripple, every duck was stone cold dead when it hit the water same goes for that goose! Needless to say I am VERY impressed. I can't wait for Turkey season.

Where do you buy your wads & shot. Looks like it could be fun in the fields, don't imagine water hunting and a muzzleloader go together very well.

I bought the wads, overshot wads and powder at Gander Mtn, the shot I have a stockpile of from reloading. I am going to try it in the feilds Thursday but the hunt on Sunday morning was in a small spring fed swamp that doesnt freeze. I was worried about the moisture but did'nt have any misfires. I just premeasure the powder and shot before hand and put them in some 2.75" hulls of different colors and then crimp them shut. When I'm ready to reload I just cut off the end and pour it in, It works pretty good for now but I'm sure I refine it a little throughout the season.

Makes since. I assume you reload regular waterfowl loads then too? Has it been worth your efforts to do that? I have reloaded for skeet loads and it was pretty easy but I wasn't too concerned about exact details like I would expect reloading hunting loads. Anyways thanks for the info.

I was just wondering, can Hevi shot be used in muzzleloading shotguns without damage to the barrels? If it can, I bet that's a deadly combo...

Duff: Yeah it's leftover stuff from when I reloaded my own waterfowl loads but I don't do much reloading anymore.
Quackhead: I don't see why it couldn't be used following the same guidelines as reloading Hevi ie. approved wads or mylar wraps. Now you've got me thinking... I also have two bags of leftover Hevi-shot HMMMMM. I'd hate to be a duck this weekend!

I did'nt ever do the math so I can't honestly say. When I started buying a 250 shell case of 3" hevi-shot for $300.00 I quit reloading alltogether. The Waterfowler.com reloading forum was a wealth of information as was the Refuge forum if your looking at getting started.

yea I have been kicking it around for a couple years but it sure is nice to just buy a case of shells and be done as opposed to buying all the components and messing around that way!
