I thinking about giving waterfowl hunting a try but I'm not sure if I should invest in a new barrel for my 12-gauge 1187 or just use my 12 gauge 1100. The 1100 only shoots 2 3/4 and has a modified barrel. My 1187 will shoot 3" but I would need to buy a new barrel for it. Any suggestions?

Steve, Don't bother with a new barrel. Just go buy a Rem 870. The new 870's will take 2 3/4's up to 3 1/2's and you can't beat them in the slop. You'll spend a little more than twice what anew barrel costs but they don't jam up from a little mud.

I think a 12-gauge 870 might be a bit big for a 7-year-old. Of course if I could talk SWMBO into two new firearms...

Chuck some 2 3/4" Hevi-shot shells in what you got and get out there in hunt. As sone as you become a junkie like the rest of us, you wont be asking about what you "should buy" you will just be asking for help to control your spending habits on this insane yet extreamly addictive sport!....Man its fun!

Gundude's right about the heavy shot. It'll reach out an put the hurt on em. Tell SWMBO that shotguns are like shoes. You need one for every occaision.

Good luck and always remember......... oh damn!!!......never mind

Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and ordered a new barrel for my 1187. 28" VR with a 3" chamber.
I think I will use this set up for now. Maybe later I'll switch to a sp-10. The new barrel is supposed to be in Thursday.
I'll be out on the trap range Thursday and Friday getting comfortable with the new setup.
If anyone would like to join me and a friend of mine out at the Crosley range just give me a holler. We're going to set up three or four traps and commence to having fun.
And probably making a few excuses.

I used to have a gun capable of 3.5 inch loads, but I hardly ever shot anything but 3 inchers anyway. They are plenty medicine for birds in range.
