Obviously I'm looking at doing some night hunting for feral piggys and am wondering what combination of scope and light I need to be looking at? I would dearly love to have some of the night vision equipment that is on the market now but my budget just isn't going to handle the four digit dollar mark so I'm looking at red lights and scopes. Has anyone used them?
What worked, what didn't?
I'm sure I'll be trying this out on some coyotes on my property too so it will been getting a work out ;D
My 270 now has an older model Leupold 3X9 scope on it but I'm not real enthused with the light gathering characteristics of it....
Before anyone says anything-yes it is legal for feral hogs on private land with the landowners permission!

Thanks Tenring! I had looked at the Elusive webpage and saw the XLR 250. Have you used it all?
Yeah I've looked at the Gen 3, 4 & 5 stuff but like you said-it would take a lot of saving the pennies to get into those.

I search the Net for 2 weeks, looking for opinions from people who had purchased one, what they thought of it, and would they recomend it to others who were contemplating purchase. Did not find one bad revue in all of them. Only negative post was one fellow who got the green lens, stated that in his opinion it "spooked" the animals, and he ordered up the red lense and no is satisfied. I got the red lense, and as long as you don't shine the most concentrated beam at the target, you're good to go. Just use the outer ring when taking the shot. HTH

Ive got one of the ATN $450 deals. Works out to 75 yards good, and maybe could get 100 yds. max. It's really all you need for hogs, because you can bait them in so easily. The only issue is that in order to have your eyes adjust to the light of the scope, it has a rubber eye ring that you have your eye against. That's not the problem, you can see fine, but the rifle needs to be fairly low recoil or you"ll hurt your eye.
As for other options, they can work until the hogs get shot at a time or two, they end up being like everything else. red lights will send them running, you might kill one out of a dozen.
My method is to sit in total darkness on corn. Don't turn on any lights, and wait for the sound of the hogs feeding on the corn. You can be with 20-40 yards easy. Even if they know your there by smell, they will still eat the corn but look your way a time or two. Turn on your night vision with intensifier and your in business. Most of the time, I'll work Alvin York style, taking the firtherest hog first, then wait a few and the ones still alive will be back in a few seconds. most of the time, you can kill a couple of big ones, and all the piglets you want.
