Don't let anyone tell you there aren't feral hogs in this area. I've been seeing plenty of sign every time I'm down there but it's pretty thick river bottom where I'm hunting.
I finally got a glimpse/almost shot at one last Friday evening. I really wasn't ready and only had him looking at me for a couple of seconds before he followed the other two that were running ahead of him. Had about enough time to get the 270 up and flip the safety off...grrr.
Then to add insult to injury I'm almost asleep in the back of my pickup (next to the hunting area) that night about 11 o'clock and over the roar of the spring peepers it dawns on my I'm hearing something different and finally realize it's hogs grunting!!! Of course the rifle is locked up in cab and all I've got in the back is my little .380 I check the next AM after the peasoup fog burns off and find tracks from what I'm assuming was a sow and half grown piggys that came within 20 yards of the truck
Hunted hard all day Sat but didn't see anymore "on the hoof". There is all kind of sign though. Can't wait until I can get back down there again!!
Oh yeah-the "roll around" pipe feeders that I installed last month have hardly been touched-may have to bite the bullet and take my chances on a regular timed feeder but really don't have that kind of cash to throw away to supply the redneck trespassing ATV's with more stuff to steal.... Have I said anything about the meth labs that the landowner has reported??
I will say this though-DO NOT expect to just waltz in anyplace in this area and expect the locals to let you go hog hunting!!! It's taken me many years of research and talking to friends of friends of friends...well you get the picture...before I was able to get permission to hunt here.
