I have recently acquired a 30 and 40 acre pieces of wooded land to hunt on. I walked the land on Friday but didn't find much sign of deer. I saw a couple paths and a few prints in the mud, nothing that really popped, like old rubs or shredded trees. There were quite a few nut trees, acorns, shag bark hickory, and walnuts. Both plots are surrounded by corn, so I am not sure what need to be done to entice the critters in there.
This is my first time not having my hunting buddies who knows more than me about the woods. So I think my next step is to put my camera out and see where they are traveling.
If you have suggestions of other things I should be doing in the off season, please let me know.
Thanks. Mike

If there is corn on all sides of it now, there is a real good chance next year it will be surrounded by soybeans.

Look for pinch points and other likely spots to set up stands then just keep out of it. Scout from the road when it is in beans.

Man I really need to proof read my posts when I am sending them from my phone. The message was hard to read. Sorry!
I do like the proboards app!
Thanks for the suggestions. There are a few really large lanes where a truck has been through, probably hauling timber. Heck it could be from that bobcat I saw posted on the site today, the one carrying a morel.

Another point to keep in mind is that the trails you see now look much more used than they will in the fall because right now they are mostly covered with leaves that have been there all winter and have been trod on many times. In the fall, they will be covered with freshly fallen leaves and the traffic sign will be much harder to detect.
I always like to walk the woods at this time of year because the trails are so much more evident. Just a quick walkthrough will show many traffic patterns clearly that would take longer and closer examination to find in the fall right before season.
It's very true that lots of the trails you see now so clearly may not be as much in use in the fall because of different food sources or cover conditions at that time, but some will likely also be travel routes that are used throughout the year. They are at least places to keep in mind, and trails that deserve consideration to analyze their usage by the deer.

Mike .........the deer sign could all change by October 1......... i have one woooooooods to hunt thats loaded with sign in the spring ,but not much sign in the fall...good luck I agree.....the absolute best spot I have to hunt doesnt have hardly any deer that live there and virtually no deer sign other than a couple trails. the deer all live to the north and south, but during the rut deer cruise through there going from one area to the other...for this reason i never set foot in there until the rut, and I always see tons of deer, but outside the rut.....my cameras only pick up the odd deer here and there

Small tracts can be good, but you really have to be careful on how you hunt and when. Don't take much to blow everything out of there. Hopefully, your the only one hunting it that you have to worry about?

I went through with my gps, marking waypoints along the way. So hopefully that will help out with scouting come late summer/early fall.
The owner told me he will have cattle in one of the fields after the crops are out, I doubt the deer really care if cattle are there. Actually I think it might help, if I move and they hear it, I can just moo! Haha
I am finding out how much of a time consumer this hunting thing is when you get serious about it. My wife thinks I am insane with all the time I have put into writing land owners and meeting with them. I think it is fun and you get to meet interesting people with great life stories.
Thanks for the info guys.
