My 12 year old boy shot his first banded bird. A goose. Cool thing... for years he's helped band geese. He's been banding since age 7. has a nice scar on his chest from a goose foot.... he's kinda proud of it actually. He and his cousin took out two of three geese that flew over them. I was walking my youngest to the truck Saturday.... he got cold (age 4). Sunday found the same bunch- my hunting buddy, my oldest, his cousin and me in a boat on a local lake. My oldest boy's cousin(my ex-nephew....). was setting dekkes and tripped over a stump. He started hunting with us late last year and has really taken to it. His dad isn't in the picture much and my son asked if he could go with us... My buddy and I dropped the boys off at their pier along with two more geese and a mallard. total for the weekend: 6 woodies, two mallards, 5 geese.

REcently, due to roll over in the biologist position, it has been hard. I contacted the office via email stating my DU committee and kids would be glad to help. I got a reply as to when and where..... organized a group to help and we did. The banding takes place in late June early July... geese loose their flight feathers and the young birds can't fly yet. the geese are herded into a pen and data recorded, banded and let go/ transplanted..... Very dirty job, but very interesting.

Turpie, I live in the extreme north east corner. Most of the state is typically covered. This is due to verifying with the USFWS that our birds don't migrate anymore..... hopefully we'll get a biologist that will stay put for more that a year or two and the issue can be addressed. I'd contact the Bloomington DNR office once Jan gets here and offer to gather a group to assist. The worst that can happen is that they say no.

Bird was banded in Leonre ILL. I've shot banded birds in the same pond from Michigan, a duck from Wisconsin, and a goose from right down the road that I helped band. Interesting little puddle ?
