PROPOSED EARLY GOOSE AND TEAL SEASONS ANNOUNCED IN ILLINOIS
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is proposing a 15-day early Canada goose season for Sept. 1-15 and a nine-day teal season for Sept. 10-18. The proposal has been endorsed by the IDNR Natural Resources Advisory Board and is awaiting approval by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Early Goose Season
The 15-day statewide early Canada goose season includes a bag limit of five birds in the northeast zone and two in the remainder of the state, which includes the north, central and south zones. The possession limit in each zone is twice the bag limit. Hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.
The giant Canada goose population is estimated at more than 93,000 in Illinois. Canada geese taken in the September season do not count toward the regular season quota.
Teal
The statewide blue-winged teal season is Sept. 10-18 from sunrise to sunset. The daily bag limit is four with a possession limit of eight. The spring breeding population estimate is 4.58 million birds, allowing for a nine-day season. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service teal harvest strategy requires at least 4.7 million breeding blue-winged teal to allow a 16-day season.
Please note that the release says "blue-winged teal season" when in reality all species of teal may be taken as usual (green-winged, blue-winged and cinnamon teal).
The rest of the waterfowl hunting seasons are expected to be announced later this summer.
