OK heres the deal. I never hunted ducks until about 6 or 7 years ago.( Now I am addicted) I'm pretty much self taught in this game. I have a few cheap calls that I TRY and blow with limited success. ( I had one duck run into a tree and kill himslef because he was laughing at my atempt to use a call) ANYWAY I keep seeing these expensive acrylic calls out there. Are they worth the money? And if so which ones? I know this kinda like asking what gun or truck to buy but I am interested in opinions.....
Thanks gundude Gundude

I use the el cheapo "meat" calls for ducks. Mainly hunt close quarters so don't need a super loud call, and could probably do just as well with no call period.
I have just recently upgraded my short reed goose call to an acrylic. It is a breeze to blow, can be really loud and fairly mellow.
If you really want to get some of these pricey calls, get on one of the main waterfowl forums, guys are always selling one to buy another. Usually they have only been used in the truck or around the house. I got a call that gets $150 new for $85 shipped to me. It looked brand new and sounds good to me. If I didn't like it I know I could have turned around and sold it for that much or more.

I use cheap calls as well, and good cover, but I know some people who say acrylic is the best way to go. When I get another one it will be a acrylic. First I need more decoys. Money, money, money!

gundude, what ever you do, don't listen to anything duff tells you. He'll lead you astray, especially if it has anything to do with goose hunting. ;D

I only tell you that kind of gibberish so that you will do all the calling. Dang it's hard enough to keep Indy from unloading my gun and then sit up and shoot with out hyperventilating cause I've been calling.
Goose hunting is for the multi-taskers
flag, hide, call, flag, call, shoot, miss, call, flag
And soon we get to add the pulling of flapper cords to the whole jumble, no wonder my gun doesn't always get loaded. Got too much other stuff cluttering up my mind.

[/glow] And soon we get to add the pulling of flapper cords to the whole jumble, no wonder my gun doesn't always get loaded. Got too much other stuff cluttering up my mind. [glow=red,2,300]That is a lot of stuff. Rather than overload yourself you could always fetch for 410 and I. I bet he has an extra shell like Dirty Dog uses for you to lay under. [/glow] I'm already looking forward to season again.

Man I forgot all about the flappers and I got 2 of them. I best get out in the back yard and start practicing. You finally get it all down and then "BAM" new toys to fool with. This should be an interesting season.

Hey Duff, what about me? Do I too get to hunt some of the honey holes or you just doing to take me to the "well they were here yesterday" spots? The birds are starting to congregate at the state police station pond.

Been seeing a group of 20-30 in the same field every morning on the way to work between Pendleton and Anderson. The weeds are starting to get high so I doubt they'll be in there much longer. I'll check the places I know West of town near the river, and a couple places in Delaware County. Also plan on shooting every Wednesday evening at IGC from here on out.

I got a days work ahead of me before the season gets here. I need to empty the trailer and put all my decoys back together. I've replaced some reeds in my calls and been practicing on and off since the end of last season.

Why oh Why did start waterfowl hunting? This is maddening just sitting around and waiting. Im going up to meet a guy this weekend who has about 30 calls or so. He said I could try them out see what I think. Nice guy, I have hunted a time or two with him and the one thing I have learned form him is there are times when the best call you can use is the one you just leave hanging around your neck. In other words no when to shut up.....
Of course when I am calling, everyone wishes I would shut up:>)
Anyway thanks for the helpful info and emails guys. I apprecaite it. I got a case of heavy shot and probably close to a full case of steel shot ready. I bought another dozen mallard decoys, some wind socks, new waders and now all I need is a new boat to run on the river... ( looks like my girlfreind is gonna have to start working a little overtime soon!) I would do it but I got other stuff that needs to get done before the season starts:>)
HUNT ON!
