So a couple of times this week my gas furnace has run past the temperature it is supposed to. I left it off last night and just turned it back on this morning because I didn't want to run it while we were asleep. Anyone had an issue like this? So far today it is fine.

Replace the thermostat. Should fix it. james thats funny....you dont know how many times i hear that....i do hvac for a living. everybody says they think its the thermostat or that they already tried replacing it. your problem actually sounds like it could be a relay issue or an overheating issue. if the furnace is still running once it has satisfied temperature pull the thermostat faceplate off the wall. if the furnace keeps running, its not the thermostat...if it shuts off, then replace the stat. if it isnt the stat, the next step depends on what style of furnace you have...(draft hood, 80%, 90+%, mobile home, ect.) i can walk you through diagnosis if i know what type of furnace we are dealing with.

My daughter and son-in-law had one of the Honeywell programable type stats in their previous home. They came home one afternoon and the furnace had a runaway. Their home was over 100 degrees and the furnace was still running. Almost killed both of their cats. They yanked the stat and refuse to use a "smart" stat again. If you have one of those, that could be your problem. I'm not an expert so take the steps that sleepergsx suggests.

Thanks Sleeper, I will try that and let you know the results. I wish I would have read this earlier because it did it again a couple of hours ago. I actually think I might have done that last night now that I think about it and it kept running. Will try again to make sure.

Please get it checked, whatever you do. Not worth the risk!
I played games with an old furnace a few years back and almost became the first factory worker from Clarksburg to reach orbit. My old stove leaked a bit of gas inside it's housing, and when it kicked on it gave a little "whump!" along with an alarming flame. Well, I was at work and a big enough flash blew out the pilot light. Being an older stove, it didn't know it's light was out and the thermostat, sensing the cold, poured on the gas. When I got home the stove was hissing and the place reeked of gas. A few hours later and I might have made the paper!

Sleeper, it ran over today and turned the theromostat off and it kept running. Had to cut power to the furnace to get it to shut off.

ok...did you pull the stat off the wall or just turn it off? is it a digital stat or a mercury(dial) stat? if you have the stat turned off and still on the wall, it could still be a stat problem if it is still sending a signal to the furnace. if you have an older stat that isnt digital, then it is likely something else....i need to know what kind of furnace you have....then i will be happy to help you check a couple things.
