Stupid question, but how do you make your own trail cam? Not a stupid question at all. I will post pics of the inside and outside of unit. I don't have a tutorial put together but I will try to explain a little bit about it. As you can see in the above picture there is a camera and an electronic board mounted in a waterproof box. The camera is a Sony S600. There are many cameras that can be used but the trick is to wire in or "hack" the camera so that the board will control it. The boards are bought already built and are specific to the model of camera used. There are four or five board makers out there and the boards run anywhere from $39-$59. Depending on what you pay for the camera itself, you can usually build a unit for about $100-$125. As you can see from my original post, the pics are fantastic. If anyone is interested in building one I would be more than happy to help you. Just PM me. Blessings.......Pastorjim

Has anyone figured out to make a homebrew IR camera in the same price range?

Has anyone figured out to make a homebrew IR camera in the same price range? Yes IR cams can be built and I don't think the price is much different. That is beyond my abilities at this time but I have seen many on other sites. I never messed with them because I have always preferred white-flash cameras. I even know a guy who is building black-flash cams that have no visible flash. Blessings......Pastorjim

I like the cuddy's fast trigger time, but wish that they'd offer a multiple shot option - 3 or so pictures one right after the other. Or a video mode that also had the time/date stamp on it. Seeing what is on the property is nice, but getting a time/date is even better. I don't mind changing the batteries every few weeks, but I like the battery life of the Moultries. Not a fan of the slow trigger speed or white-outs. I really like the clarity of the homebrews, and the options of a custom camera for less $.

Check out this guy. His work is top notch, although his prices are kinda high. He is a master camera maker and he will offer any advice you need to do your own build. www.jtswildlifecameras.com/Blessings......Pastorjim

I agree that many commercial cams have caught up as far as build quality goes. As I said in my post, I got into it because of picture quality. No commercial maker is coming close to the homebrews yet. I also agree with the cellular concept but those have a long way to go. In the area where I hunt, my cell phone doesn't even work half the time so I'm sure a cell based camera would have a hard time. When they start building a cell camera that takes great pics I will be first in line to buy one. But IMO the technology is just not there yet.

When pixcontroller sold to tbe public I made and RF unit where it transmitted from my sensor to my camera over 200 yds away. Great way to catch trespassers. You make any W7? I use those and P41's for my IR units.

You are definately at a higher level than I if you were able to build a unit that transmits. I wouldn't know where to begin with that. I do have one W7 but it is white-flash. I really like the pics from it. I have seen pics from the Smart-Scouter, Buckeyecam, and Scoutguard, all cams that broadcast pics. None of them seem to have the pic quality I am after. I have never seen the pics from Moultries system but the monthly cost is prohibitive, although the Moultrie I-40s I used to have took the best pics from any commercial cam I have ever owned. Here is my current stable of cams.

Reconyx is the best commercial cam hands down. Your s600 ha the best flash and thats what I use in my W7 IR cams. I hacked Nikons, but the IR hack was brutal. I woild run all P41's and be done with it.

I have the cap mod on my W7 as well, really lites up the night. I saw some pics from a Sony H70 the other day and they were really good. The H70 is a current model so they are readily available. I'd like to have one but sliding another camera past the wife might be risky.

I guess I am already hooked on the idea of making one of these guys. I just purchased a Sony W80 for $40 shipped on Craigslist. Time will tell if it was a waste of money or not. Now to determine which setup I want to go with. I am thinking about the ss2 board.
If anyone has any tips or know of better boards and configurations, I would be happy to hear about them.

I don't know anything about the W80. I don't think you could go wrong with that particular board on any camera. Just make sure the W80 is one that will work with it. Let me know how it works out.

After reading on hagshouse, i have found there are several people who have hacked the w80. They say the only issue is the flash, and a slave flash would be needed. I may try it without the slave flash at first, I don't know that night pictures really help other than being nice to look at.
I will post back soon! Thanks for the info pastor.

Lyman,
Are you still selling those cameras. The one I bought from you works like a charm.
