And Dec, I couldn't agree with you more about the performance of the HMR round. I love the combo with the Leupold 2-7x scope I have mounted. I have gotten 2 co\yotes and 1 fox with it and it performed very well. Both coyotes acted as if they had been stung by a bee, then dropped within 5 feet of where they were hit. The fox looked like someone turned off his light switch...just dropped.
It is a wonderful round for those longer shots, which I enjoy. We like to sit along the edge of a cut field and wait for the squirrels to come out to feed on the dropped grain.
The fun is in the hunt, not the kill.

Chico - I have not tried those rounds and likely will not. I am usually not too worried about what a hole looks like in my game as they are usually hit in the head, as you can see. I prefer to pass on body shots and wait for head shots, so it makes no difference to me.
I did try a li'l experiment that was neat. I put a quarter under a water filled soda can and shot it with the HMR at 50 yards. The resulting hydraulic presure from the bullet made a perfect stamped impression of the quarter on the bottom of the can.

Decatur - I would be happy to have you come along if you'd like to shoot a few of these. My Uncle would like to see many more of these critters removed from his woods. There are plenty of them to go around.
We are between Lafayette and Delphi. I also have a place to hunt east of Rochester that I will squirrel hunt on as a manner of scouting for deer season. We will be going there camping for a weekend of placing some shooting huts to keep warm, since all my hunting buddies are wimps. Also will be planting a patch of purple-top turnips for a feed plot there this year the same weekend.
Just send me a mail and let me know.

I am a 22lr man.I was talking about just having a lot of luck finding squirrels last season like singleshooter .I agree with Decatur,I can't see spending the extra money for something a 22lr can do.Dead is dead. Now if I was looking for something with a little more power,I think I'd look at the 17's before I would the 22 mag .

I am also a 22lr fan. I hunt more with my Browning Buckmarks and Ruger Mark-II Government and stainless slabside more than I do the 17's because I love to pistol hunt and they are much less cumbersome and heavy than the Contender.
Then again.....maybe I should just call Bullberry or OTT and get a short custom barrel for the Tender in a 17 cal??
I just like the 17's because they can hold dead on so far away and I can watch the hit through the scope. Try knocking a crow over and watch the feathers fly through the scope...too kewl!!

That's what I had thought about doing was getting a mach2 pistol barrel for my Contender, but then I decided to stay with the 22 match grade pistol barrel I already have.

I can't see spending the extra dough to do what a .22lr can already do. Dead is dead. You can't be more than dead, unless it's destroyed! A friend of mine tried the mach 2 on groundhogs, and was VERY disappointed. You are more than correct: "Dead is dead". But I love guns and had to get an HMR when they came out and the same for the HM2. I have taken lung shots with both and will tell you that the HM2 is not much different in damage than the .22 LR. The HMR however will almost separate the front from the back of a gray squirrel (I have yet to try the 20 grain Gamepoints). As far as medicine for groundhogs, the HMR is definitely the better choice. But, I haven't had any complaints about shooting them as far as 125 yards with the HM2. Lights out!

This thread is old as dirt, but still interesting. I have a ruger 77/22 which shoots the aguila sss 60 gr slugs rather well, and my weatherby 22 shoots remington golden bullets quite well also. And I have an amt 22 with a scope. Those are my squirrel guns. I am thinking about a 17 m2 barrel for my ruger 77/22, or maybe even for my ruger markII. Just for plinking around mostly, as I have to agree with the statement 'dead is dead'...
