Has anyone actually hunted with this round yet? I am extremely interested to hear reviews on it. A certain savage model has caught my eye, along with numerous reviews on the cartridge. How does it compare to the .17HMR for small game hunting? I am not concerned about varmints, mainly squirrel I guess.

I haven't shot it personally , but folks I've spoken with who have said "head shots only" . That's a hot little round .

I though of buying a rifle for the .17 M2 cartridge but have decided that it would be too distructive for Squirrels. Also the range would be limited and I would think its tiny bullet would have a hard time getting through the tree twigs and such. I think I'll stick with the .22 LR H.P as it is much more reliable and less expensive than any .17 rimfire.

Sometimes, I like to use my .22 Hornet for Squirrels. I have developed an accurate load which is non-destructive and really drops them fast! ;D

Even the .22 lr is pretty destructive with body shots, so head shots are in order anyway.

I got to shoot one in Okalahoma this year during a pairie dog shoot. I like the .17 HMR better for p. dogs, but thought it would be great for squirrels. The .17 bullets are extremely accurate. The gun I shot was a modifed Ruger 10/22 and was basically a single shot due to it failing to cycle a fair amount o fthe time. I wouldn't recommend a semi-auto until the bugs get worked out, but in other actions it would be great.

I have a .17 HMR, but I can't see me replacing the .22 with a .17M2.

It depends on what you use it for. In the fall with leaves on I prefer the .22, later after the leaves have fallen the m2 would be my choice. The hmr is overkill for squirrels.

Love it on Tree'd coon ...zap 'em in the eye with no pass through ....with the right scope you can place bets with the guys and flip a coin as to which eye you wanna hit ........ but that's all I have shot with it ....when you shoot 'em they are DRT when they hit the ground .....
I also shoot the HMR and it is great for squirrel ( bit much for body shots ) but ya don't eat the head anyway ..... I've put down yotes with the HMR at 100yrds or less , I would never attempt it with the Mach II ....

Doesn't matter - head shots are destructive also. This was an approx. 80 yard shot with the CCI 17 grain holow point HMR ammo out of a 14" barreled Contender. Haven't shot the HM-2 ammo yet - have been told that it is just as accurate, but is more limited in range. The HMR has dropped crows for me out past 150 yards, but the HM-2, as I was told, should be kept at 100 yards or less.

Hey singleshooter, have you tried the new gamepoint solid .17 HMR rounds yet? They leave a bit neater hole.

I can't see spending the extra dough to do what a .22lr can already do. Dead is dead. You can't be more than dead, unless it's destroyed! A friend of mine tried the mach 2 on groundhogs, and was VERY disappointed.

A friend of mine tried the mach 2 on groundhogs, and was VERY disappointed. I agree with you there on the mach 2, but I LOVE the HMR. The smaller centerfires are too big for most all of my needs, but the .22 just doesn't have enough spunk for the beavers that pack the 30 yard 12 inch spillway pipe full of mud on our lake. The HMR has claimed two guilty parties so far.

I've got the .17 hmr and love it. I don't "hunt" with it, as I really don't hunt squirrels or rabbits (unless I've got my bow in hand). I bought one because I wanted something to drive tacks with out past 100 yards. While a .22 lr or .22 mag are great (I've got one of each), they don't drive tacks (at least for me). So I got the .17 hmr.
I've used it on many woodchucks and a few feral cats in the past year and it does an awesome job of dropping them in their tracks. After breaking it in and with a good scope, I can pick off at dime at 100 yards pretty easily. They are impressive little rounds. I would not hesitate to hold on the ear of a coyote with one.
I agree though the .17 would destroy a squirrel or rabbit unless it were a head shot.
