Injured farmer critical
By LEN WELLS Courier & Press correspondent (618) 842-2159 or rlwells@shawneelink.net August 20, 2005
WEST SALEM, Ill. - A prominent Edwards County farmer is in critical condition after being hit in the back by an unknown object while he was mowing.
Authorities believe 54-year-old Michael Luthe may have been accidentally shot by a squirrel hunter Thursday afternoon. The object that struck Luthe has not been surgically removed for identification.
The object is lodged close to Luthe's heart, making surgery risky. Family members say the object entered his chest and collapsed a lung.
Luthe was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, where he was listed in critical condition Friday.
The scene of the accident was a rural area of Edwards County west of West Salem, near the Wayne-Edwards county line. Officials with the Edwards County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
Squirrel season opened on Aug. 1 in Illinois, and runs through Jan. 20. Sportsmen can hunt from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. Luthe was hit around 2 p.m.
In addition to farming, Luthe also serves as superintendent of the Edwards County Fair Board

squirrelhunter, How could you do this man? Seriously that sucks!! I always try to think about where my shots may go, even if it means passing up a good shot once in awhile.

Hmmm.............That is a shame if he was shot, but, if I read the account correctly, it says that he "may have been shot accidentally" and they said "an object", not a bullet had entered him. Who would have been squirrel hunting Aug.19 or Aug. 20 in Illinois with the heat we have been experiencing at 2:00 p.m. I hope he will be alright but have to wonder if he was shot at all.................................Hoosier.

Time will tell; I guess. It could be his mower picked up something and threw it.

Folks remember a .22 cal could shoot up to a 1 1/2 mile away if shot at the right upward angle such as shooting at a squirrel in a tree. Now can you see a 1 mile away while hunting in the woods. My guess would be the .17 HMR probably travels even farther.

I could have been by someone that was just practice shooting and was not trained on safety not just someone hunting.

Bad deal. A farmer buddy of mine had a deer slug go thru the grain hopper on his combine, "while he was in the cab eating luch". He never did see who did it!

You wonder why it's so hard to get farmer brown to give you permission to hunt his ground. I'm not saying this incident was intentional but it just seems like the whole thing is an accident waiting to happen. Whats worse is you'll have 100 guys that follow the rules and saftey guidlines then you'll have one guy screw it up for every one. I know this is a few months past the incident but I hope the farmer is ok, if it was a squirrel hunter and he or she knew they did it I hope they are found. If it was intentional I hope they trow the book at them. JMO
