I just put my first deer in the freezer and I just sent a pig into get butchered and it got me thinking about buying a smoker. I am new to smoking and wanting to start out cheap and if it something that I find myself doing a lot then I may invest or build a better one. I am prolly going to want to stay under $200. I am not sure if I want to go propane or electric. I want to stay away from charcoal starting out. For those of you that have a propane smoker, how long does 1 tank last? I am looking for Recommendations, Thoughts, Input? Thanks guys!!

i would choose a electric over propane being that youwont have to babysit the electric one as much as a propane one for around 250 you can get a nice electric unit from bass pro (bass pro model but made by master built) hope this helps

Obviously an old post, but on this topic, if anyone is considering buying or making a smoker, first google "ugly drum smoker" and you will find loads of info on this DIY project. The end result is an awesome smoker for not much money. No real skill required either, so that's a plus for folks who are better cooks than they are mechanics. I made mine with an old Weber grill top, and have so far cooked brisket, chicken and duck. Will do a wild turkey soon. Everything has turned out awesome, and it used very little fuel (charcoal / lump charcoal) as compared to a grill.

You won't regret it, but you might regret waiting that long to make one!
