I've guided at 4 preserves here in Indiana through the years. The average tip "per hunter" or "per gun" is typically $10-$20. I've guided hunts where the party asks if I want any of the birds as part of the tip and I'm fine with that (we make a pretty good chukar stew). I've guided hunts where I got zip for a tip and that is probably because the hunters didn't know it was considered good practice. It never really bothered me because you really don't make much guiding anyway once you tally the cost of dog food, Vet bills, gas, upkeep, etc. I love to guide and my dogs love it even more. Many of the "corporate" hunts I guide will bring a tip of $100 per party (which is a maximum of 4 guns at most preserves). The higher tip on these hunts is because I've guided them before, have gotten to know the guys through the years, take a ton of pictures and so on.
Basically, $20 per hunter is a good generous tip.

Thanks that kind of info I needed. The preserve I hunted at I paid for the guide and dog directly to the guide and I did tip him but wasnt sure what to tip. That was about 7-8 years ago. I plan on hunting at Sugar Creek near Mitchel this seaon. Have you ever guided/hunted there?
Thanks again

I've never guided or hunted at Sugar Creek or Lost River. I've talked to both owners and hear good things about both. I primarily guide at Royal Flush north of Terre Haute. It is a bit to travel but I am good friends with the owner and the other guides and I like the fields. I also guide at Presnell and Stotts east of Martinsville and Flatrock near Milroy/Rushville.
Since it looks like you are from Scott County, Sugar Creek and Lost River make perfect sense for you. You probably know this (but in case you don't), it is best to give a preserve a few hunts before forming an opinion. The birds are generally pen raised and sometimes just don't fly well. Always tell the owner and they will usually give some type of consideration like extra birds the next time out or a rate cut when you come down again (when they will hopefully get some better birds). For this reason, I always recommend mixing the bag of birds (chukar and quail or chukar and pheasant for example). If one species is not flying well, the other will usually be better.
Good Luck and enjoy!

Sorry to get off of topic but where exactly is the Presnell and Stotts preserve? I live about 45 minutes south of Rushville and we're always looking for a new place to take the GSP.

I usually tip $50.00 - $ 100 plus dog treats for the guides dog or dogs , usually the more birds i buy the bigger tip i give . I've even offered the guide to shoot a bird or two .
