Fall baseball ate up the morning and early afternoon, and with no good goose options I decided to take Kyle and see if we couldn't get him his first duck. When we were discussing the hunt my 7 year old for the first time asked if SHE could come! Never before had she shown any interest, so I modified things to accommodate her and we set out for some woodies.
Kyle was the primary shooter and I was just there to "guide" as all three of us lurked in the weeds of the creek we were sitting next to. We watched a group of woodies work their way down to us and I had to convince Kyle that a duck's eyesight is dang near that of a turkey and he had to be motionless as we let the birds work into range. Just when I was going to tell him to stand and shoot the ducks didn't like something and they spun and exploded out of the water! I yelled to take 'em and after Kyle got off 2 shots a drake floated motionless in the water!
Kyle was elated and my daughter was just as happy with her brother's success. We snapped some photos and got ready for more. With only 10 minutes of legal time left we saw a pair working their way towards us on the water. This time the ducks got slightly closer and I told him to stand and take 'em whenever he was ready and after one shot there was another dead drake with the other flying away. I asked him why he didn't go for the other and he replied that it was a hen and he didn't think we were supposed to kill the hen. LOL! I told him that he could take either since he was a kid but he was happy to let the Suzy fly away. We were very happy and the two drakes filling the hands of my son and daughter made for a great photo-op! The only down side......now I've gotta get him (and perhaps her) waterfowl gear!
The hunters:
Kyle's first duck:
Morgan was happy for her big brother:
Woody #2:
Happy hunters:
