Assuming the deer rule package final adopted September 20, 2011 is effective with the 2012 deer season, the maximum case length of cartridges that may be used in rifles increases to 1.800 inches. Considering this, A. J. Brown Arms (www.ajbrownarms.com) is offering custom bolt action rifles, barrels for TC Encore, loaded ammo, and formed cases for a new cartridge, the .358 Hoosier TM. This cartridge has been extensively tested with a variety of bullets and powders. Following are some of the desirable points that may be considered by a hunter wanting a new rifle, whether it is a custom-built bolt action (basic economy model up to a fancy expensive one) or just an extra barrel for his TC Encore: • The .358 Hoosier TM, a center fire cartridge that may be legal in rifles for deer hunting in 2012 • 2650 ft/sec with 180 grain bullets; 2525 ft/sec with 200 grain bullets • Ballistics (velocity, energy, and trajectory) much superior to the .35 Remington • Ballistics approx. equal to factory .358 Winchester and slightly less than the currently legal .358 WSSM wildcat • Cases easily made from economical and readily available .358 Winchester brass • Can be used in economical, standard short-action bolt rifles originally chambered for the .308 Winchester family of cartridges (e.g., .308 Win, .243 Win, 7mm-08, .22-250 Rem) • Can be used in single shots & semiautomatics chambered for the .308 family of cartridges • No need for bolt face or extractor modifications • No need for magazine or side rail modifications, or spacers for proper feeding This is not a wildcat boasting the highest possible velocity with the 1.800 maximum case length. However, it is a very practical wildcat. It offers economical basic rifle and brass costs, easily formed and loaded brass, and all the bullet velocity, energy, and accuracy needed to cleanly take deer up to the maximum distance at which probably 99 percent of the hunters are capable of accurately placing a bullet under field conditions. Exterior ballistics are just slightly less than the existing, currently legal .358 WSSM wildcat (1.625 inches long case) with its fatter case body.

Couldn't find any info on their site, sounds very interesting. Wonder if a Handi will handle the pressure?

As far as I know, the 358 Win is a necked up 308, so cases for the 358 Hoosier should be able to be made from 308 brass, correct?
This is the way I'm going for 2012.

Thanks for posting some of the details! Can you give us any prices? Maybe a blued and ss T/C barrel? Reloading die costs?
What are the different bullets available to use in the 180gn weight?

I may be wrong (and probably am?) but aren't the questions about prices kind of playing around with the rules of this board about buying/selling firearms?

A. J. Brown is in the process of updating his website to include information on the wildcat cartridge. The website contact info address and phone number are correct. An additional email is aj_brown@sbcglobal.net.
Brass could be made from commercial .308 Winchester; however, that would involve an extra step in necking it up. It is STRONGLY recommended that military brass and any commercial brass made to military specs NOT be used. Military brass is generally thicker than commercial brass and could possibly require reducing the brass thickness in the new case necks to work properly and safely. Making brass from factory .358 Winchester automatically gives “358” in the headstamp of all your wildcat cases.
Please contact A. J. Brown for more information on various options, prices, etc. Also, he will have a table this weekend at the Indy 1500 Show. It is located on or near the south wall of the building. He will have a 358 HoosierTM bolt rifle he built plus a TC Encore with a barrel made by MGM.

I may be wrong (and probably am?) but aren't the questions about prices kind of playing around with the rules of this board about buying/selling firearms? And you may be right...I dunno maybe WW can shed some light? We are ok about asking prices on guns and gun parts from a firm. Iow - "where can I get a certain gun at a certain price" or "Dicks has sale on Rugers" is OK. Posting "I have a certain gun and am wanting to sell it what do you all think is a fair price?" that is pretty thinly veiled as an offer to sell here.

Interesting caliber that's for sure... Yes it is. If a guy can just take 358 winchester brass, easily form it and trim to length it will appeal to a wider range of guys than the wssm stuff does. A lot more donor rifles available too.

Converting a 358 levergun would make for a very fun little rifle........wonder if there would be any feeding issues?

Just talked to AJ Brown company and put my name on the list for an Encore barrel! They will be set up at the Indy 1500 this weekend and taking orders. The brass is easy to make out of stock 358 win brass, just resize and trim to length! load data is very similar to the 358 win. I'm excited about this wildcat!
