With the past few mornings being decently warm ... huntin partner and i got an itch to see if the northern birds were becomin vocal or not yet.. Boy was it a good idea. No owl call, crow call nothin...... these birds went nuts this mornin. Gotta love hearin those first gobbles of the year. The first woods sounded like 2 jakes and maybe maybe a smaller gobbler.. no real thunder but i nice solid gobble. The next woods though.. O King strut was tryin to shake the woods down it sounded like.... Ended up makin it to our last spot evidently just at fly down... herd one gobble about halfway through the property so we drove to the other end and here came 2 big boys headed for a wooods across the field. WHAT A MORNIN!!! Ended up hearin atleast 5 birds... and got visuals on 3 big gobblers.

Yup-they were sure sounding off back on my property this AM. This is the third year that I can say that they have been back there again.and I'm getting more excited about it. The birds were there probably 10-12 years and then the neighboring property changed hands, a developer tried to open it for a housing development which meant that there survey teams in there constantly for a couple of months- ripping, tearing, clearing and tromping around- and the birds left. Thankfully the development never got a permit to bridge the creek and it died. Now there is development where the original flock of birds has been (we've counted more than 40 in a flock before) so they are getting pushed back in our direction. Hopefully we'll start seeing some of the hen flock move over our way now too. All Danf and I saw last weekend when there was still snow on the ground was single tracks which tells me that the hens are not there yet. If it's not raining in tomorrow AM I'll go back again and see if I can't start patterning them

I can hardly wait to get out. I might have to go out and see if I can hear them gobble now that I know they are starting to sound off.
